Coolant Leak Trivia Time

I dropped mine off at the mechanics. I’ll try and report back on his findings and resolution.

Amongst possible water pump leak, PCV valve, and steering hoses need replacing.

@AimCOtaco

What is the specific Permatex FPIG you used- Ultra Black?

I shudder at the thought of $80 for a tube of Toyota 1282B FPIG for one job done every 100k miles (that will surely be dry next time I go to use it) , but with SLL coolant I think the Toyota 1282B is the best and only option. Ive tried cross referencing ThreeBond fpig, but there is no equivelant.

I've used 'Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker' with 'Permatex Surface Prep Activator' both times now (if you do it every 40k it dosen't dry out and you'll get to use it at least twice:frown:) . I think I found it in the @scottm DIYTBfD thread originally. Who else has used the permatex and had it last? I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other but kind of wish I'd used the T 1282B most recently... but I'm not doing it again until I have to.

So my mechanic did a pressure test on radiator and did see any leaks anywhere. We did see oil from the weep hole and rear maIn seal. But it’s just not bad enough to warrant me fixing it at this time.

I may take it somewhere for a second opinion.

EDIT:
How much do i need to remove to see if the timing belt is wet? Can i do with just the cover?

Try cleaning rear main weep hole, then watch closely. Ypou can take off plate to get better look. If indeed new engine oil appears (leaks), I'd then try AT 205 Re Seal mix at exact proportion. Do not use High Mileage oil like MI HM they are bad for seals. Note: At rear weep hole sometime oil is ATF.

Take off air box and drive belt then RH (#1 cover) T-belt cover (four bolts & a nut IIRC), to expose timing belt. Often times the center nut will hold on as stud comes out, this is PITA. Just work cover off once stud loosened. Reinstall stud first then using lock-tight on back end of stud during assemble, so next time it holds.

Thanks @AimCOtaco

I plan to use the 1282B but dang that price stings. Like you I approach my repairs, PM, and upgrades with a mind for long term reliability/durability. I generally dont cut corners, it's either OEM parts or occasionally Denso. I recently made the mistake of totaling my baselining parts only cost a few days ago and it surpassed $6k (thats 6k at discounted prices).

Seems like Toyota could supply a mini tube portion of 1282B with the waterpump as kit: (FPIG, Oring, waterpump, gasket) Like they do when providing the proprietary grease with CV boot kits, or small packet of grease with ball joint boot.

There are currently a few sellers on eBay with tubes around $30. I picked one up for my upcoming TB/WP service.

Thanks- got me wondering at less than 1/2 the price of discounted 1282B, can you trust the authenticity of the ebay product? Theres been evidence of this on other “Toyota” branded parts.

I had a bad tube of the 1282B (was a bit stringy) that I bought from Dealer. Was nice to just swap out with new tube locally.
