-4 c. Glow screen been disconnected for years. Batteries about 5 yrs old. No pedal.
Smoke soon clears once there is some heat in the motor.

Vid a bit rushed. Busy road.

Wow, that's pretty impressive being the glow screen is disconnected. That is a 1HDFT correct?

Not sure if it has been posted but if you crank for 5-10 seconds before glowing and starting, it builds compression in the cylinders and makes cold starts a little easier. Also more than one glow cycle helps too.

Oh and a block heater! 😉

Cheers

yes, 1HD FT. the 1HD T is pretty much the same.

we dont get temps as low as you fellas. minus 8 was the lowest and it started the same as in the video.

It's mild where I live too (Vancouver Island Canada). Much like the UK actually.

Woke up to -18F/-28C this morning, so I thought a cold start video might be fun. The cruiser had been sitting overnight at that temp and was definitely cold through and through. The vehicle has 325k KM on the clock, but the injection pump and all 6 injectors were recently rebuilt.

How do you post a video?
When I hit the "attach files" button, I can select pictures, but videos are greyed out.

I’m not sure how to post a video hosted on ih8mud, but if you upload your video to YouTube you can simply paste the url into your message and it will show up.

That is impressive, my FT smokes like crazy even at 40F until it gets warmed up. No glow screen either, EGR and ACSD deleted, not sure if that has anything to do with it. Injectors have been rebuilt, but not the pump. I live in Socal so its not an issue most of the time, but I do travel to colder parts often. Thinking of adding a wabesto coolant heater in the future.

Probably the pump then. Generally if injectors have been done then it’s the pump.

Deisel shouldn’t be that smokey at 40*. I even think that -18* start video above is to smokey. From my experience, should only puff a little smoke for 3 seconds max at even sub-zero temps. That is of course with everything in order and no issues.

I even once started an old CAT diesel that has no glows of any kind at -20*, it was hard as hell to start but once it did, not a bunch of abnormal smoke by any means. I used to regularly start my Nissan Patrol diesel at sun zero temps, before if fixed it, it blew tons of smoke, once I fixed it it was just a little puff. I have had the same experience with 1PZ/1HZ/1HDT/1HDFT and evening a 2H. Injectors, pump, timing and glows all good with no fuel line leaks, no issues on cold starts. Toss a block heater in closest freeze plug to the oil cooler, starts like it is 80* out with almost zero smoke when it is 25*.

Cheers

@SNLC Thanks, yea I'd like to think its not normal, especially since it hasn't always been this bad. Could it be air that's getting in somethere, accumulating over night, and the smoke is having to do with that?

This one seems to be far from home.

Came from Finland, your home country, I see.
I believe it was in the fire service there.
24v, rear heater, PTO winch...
Seems at home in the cold, once I put new glow plugs in.

Hi mates,

After two months in the garage, I tried to cold start today the venerable 3B engine (212.000 km/132.000 miles). I wanted just to make engine parts turn and charge the batteries.

During the frame-off resto of the BJ42 at a Toyota dealership in Northern Germany 14 years ago the engine has been rebuilt, at least the upper part (yes, in 2006 we could still purchase an OEM head at the local dealer...).
I made since some 10.000 km/6.200 miles, most of them in Greece.
And yes, the EDIC system works!

The driver's fender has been removed, as well as the steering column and the (manual) box, in order to swap the OEM P/S setup. As soon as I'll have the parts to overhaul the box, I will proceed and let you informed...

I would like to add that today's weather is windy and the temperature 13 C/55 F.

Sorry if the video quality is not satisfying, but I am totally inexperienced with it. Moreover, I tried alone at the same time to aim the camera (Sony α 6000) and turn the key....

Hope you will enjoy and be able to judge the condition of the engine:

...and some minutes later, the second part of the video!
The 3B works at idle.
