I had a 1/4 inch thick layer of dried soda goo where the e-brake cables terminate. I don't think it was one soda - I think it was multiple that blew up in the cupholders. Appeared to be Coke or Pepsi. And I found quite a few long, dyed-blonde hairs, and evidence of kids munching down and spilling things in the back seat too. Plus clearcoat-penetrating scratches by each door handle from what was probably a giant diamond ring. Lastly, the seatbelts were also disgusting - maybe she spilled soda all over them too?

There many pitfalls of being the last owner of a Karen-driven GX :).

work on my lunch break
Traced a stencil out for the face of the AC controls.

Found center on the stencil and the lower portion of the dash/center console piece then traced the stencil. I cut on the inside of the stencil so I could just go back with a file and make a tight fit.

Cant have the controls too low, because then you would not be able to pull the lower trim piece out (cig lighter, heated seat switches, center diff lock). Also didnt want to go too high, because there is a vertical "support" for the dash behind the upper part. I THINK I might have cleared it, but if not, ill trim the dash support slightly to clear.

I put a GMRS external speaker in the same location, and had to trim the dash quite a bit. No issues after doing that. It's a good spot to put things and is nice and out of the way.

Yea I wont be surprised if I need to trim some. I had eyeballed the height of the "crossmember" behind that trim when I removed it in hopes of none to minimal trimming.

I always hoard little things for the "ya never know when you might need it" moment lol. Well, I used some of these plastic spacers to make a mount behind the trim.
Tacked them in place with some CA glue, then put some JB Weld around to hold down. Filled the centers in with silicone so the screws could bite into it.

Sure enough, I did have to still trim a bit of the plastic crossmember on the dash

While I was in there, i swapped the center diff lock button and the drivers side seat heater switch, and changed the bulbs to red.

So this end of the project is done. All I have left to do is make a block off plate for the rear of the center console where the AC controls used to be.

Got a dash cover from AliExpress from this link. Quality seems pretty decent. Would have been nice to have a closer to stock color.. but I think the grey is a nice in-between the OEM and black vinyl wrapped parts.

Also ordered some front seat covers. These seem to be some of the most popular and they were on sale plus a promo code.

Had yesterday off. Got the passenger side seat cover installed.
Anyone recommend covers for the two front seat armrests?

I also didnt pay attention to my registration renewal close enough, this was a smog year (CA bi-annual smog check). So I also went to a test location yesterday and passed without issue :)

Amazon, eBay, Etsy all seem to have the same ones. I can’t recall where I got mine but I also have Coverado covers, albeit a different model, and the colors match and install was easy. I just cut a slit in the seat cover and installed. They come with a plastic baggie to help install, I didn’t need it. They look just fine.

Edit, just took a quick, crappy photo in the dark but you can hopefully see that the color matches well, etc

Yeah I got the armrest re-installed no problem. Ill probably order some from the bay/zon and give em a try!

GX is getting a vacation while my parents are on vacation out of the country.

Dropped the GX off at their house and drove the moostang back home

initially I was planning on just cruising around, but my dad informed me that it needs attention because it will stall out when coming to a stop.
So gunna try to figure out the issue while they're gone. More than likely, carb just needs an adjustment or there's a vacuum leak (or both).

But this was my grandfather's car, he bought it brand new off the lot. 1965 GT Fastback. Pre smog.. mmmmm

nice! my dad has a '66 289 coupe. he's had it since the 80s and it needs of some TLC. One of these days we'll get it back on the road.

My dad used to have a 66 GT Fastback too. He had it 25 ish years, and sold it right before I was old enough to drive :/
But I think he always kinda knew his dad's would go to him at some point.

Going camping with our oldest and a large group of friends and their kids this weekend. I usually take the RTT on the Trek, but figured I wanted a bit more room for gear on this trip. So found a cheap Yakima fairing on marketplace to throw on the GX. Yesterday had a buddy stop by on the way to picking his kid up from school and he helped me lift the tent to the roof.

With the Trek, I can lower the tent onto it from the garage hoist and just drive out. The GX is too tall :( So manual peasant lifting it was lol

At least we have the gated RV side of the house so I can keep it locked behind a gate. I also have a nice view from my home office :)

Nothing like a last minute mod lol.

Leaving tomorrow afternoon, parts arrived this morning. I have a handheld radio mount in my Trek, but never did anything in the GX till now.

Used a RAM 1" ball female mount from here along with a clip holder from here.

I put a thin "plate" of aluminum on the back to reinforce the plastic and try to help distribute weight a bit more

I have an extended battery on the radio, and it also has a USBc charging port on the bottom. So I dont have to put the radio on the charging base to charge it. I had a USB to USBc cable laying around that was the perfect length so it plugs into the cig lighter adapter (where the red phone cable is) so I can keep it charged while driving.
