Yeah...see what youre gettin at for protection of the Rad.
I had thought they were used MORE for a ramp of sorts, like you mentioned above. Kinda "NOSING" up onto rocks or ledges.

I believe the original intention was to keep you from doing a somersault when going down something very steep.

I've seen a 40 go ass over teakettle at Rausch Creek on a steep decline and if he didn't have a stinger, he would have landed flat on his roof. The cage would have held but that would have been a HARD landing. The stinger lessened the impact because the truck stopped and gently rolled to its side. I'll try to find the pics.

MT makes a more basic one than what you have that is not so obnoxious looking...:flipoff2:

I personally dont really care much for the look of them. However, I do like the protection idea. I didnt really think about that benefit...

Well I roll test mine :flipoff2::hillbilly: Gotta make sure that metal tech cage is still workin.

As long as I dont go over backwards I'm not to worried about going over, but I also use it to nose up onto stuff sometimes. The one on my truck works well for me and what I use the truck for. But You probably wont be putting yourself into a "situation" as often as I would or do. metal tech has a stinger and also a "nose guard" without the stinger that you could run if you just wanted the protection of the radiator but not a stinger. If you have a tube bender you could probably make something similar yourself also.

"nose guard"

and "stinger kit" Requires nose guard to achieve same look as on website.

Id have to guess that you are spot on with this.
Dropping down on to the slabs on the Rubicon, there is that one NASTY drop. When ever I had seen the 40's go down that, that is all I could think of. The one spot on that trail its NICE to have a LWB. That and the slabs themselves.

I had looked at those...Honestly didnt really see the point of getting it, but in light of this recent conversation, Im beginning to re consider it. Youre right...Im not near as "hardcore" of a wheeler as YOU, or most, but...This will be a completely different rig than my 62 was. That MT stinger is not all that expensive.:hhmm:

Got a TON of NAGGIN little details finished up this weekend, and started chewing on some that were up coming.
Made the License plate bracket, added a 1/2 in plastic block to support the swing out, hooks on the jerry can basket for strap those bitches down, finished the front bumper, added a shaft collar to the steering shaft to prevent the dust bushing from slipping and clearanced the frame a little for the steering shaft.
Was gonna make the tow points for the rear bumper, but decided that Id just use a d ring off the hitch. After I add the blinkers to the rear bumper, it would be a BIG HASSLE to cut out and weld that plate through the rear bumper cuz of the gusseting I added on the back side....screw it.
Some of this stuff is kinda fun...just little detail work that is pretty easy to do and doesnt take a TON of time.

Found these cool little acorn lights for the license plate at Summit. Thought Id test em out off a battery I got from Espressomon.
The hook points for the jerry can are ruff stuffs shock tabs. I had some 1/2 in bar that I ran through the bolt holes, welded in and trimmed the tabs a bit. Worked PERFECTLY and took almost NO TIME to do. I wasnt going to use em otherwise, so better not to waste em.

Nice pictures, huge improvement over the, brownie box camera or whatever the hell you were using. :flipoff2:

BTW Thanks for the help today. My son showed up later to help for a while, Spressomon came by to heckle me as well. Still no joy.

Oh GAWD YEAH...all Ive had has been my iphone. Pretty cool for most things, but pictures are NOT one of them.

Glad that Espresso stopped by while he was down in the area. You NEED heckling for sure!

Thanks man! FC187 IS one to emulate though for sure.
The pipe cap.... For almost ALL cuts involving radius steel Ill use a tape measure. Not a regular pull out, steel tape measure, but and flimsy, cloth and plastic type that you would use for sewing. So you take the tape measure and run it around the circumference of the pipe cap. Make a mark at the beginning or ZERO on the tape, and divide the total number of inches in half and make a mark at that number. Dont recall what it is right now... Then take the tape measure, run it across, mark to mark, pull it taut then make a line across from side to side. The physical cut I did with a 4.5 in angle grinder and cut off wheel. I do have a plasma, but that is 1/2 in steel and the cut is really rough. I DID do the cut out for the diff plug with the plasma though. For the big drain holes I used a hole saw.

Hope that helps and thanks again for the props.

Looking good man.

You did a much better job with your "swing away sliding block" than I did with mine.

Keep chipping away at it.

Jack

Thanks man!
That summer start up date is actually looking somewhat realistic. Bunch o little s*** right now.

m/t stinger saved my ass one time.....going down a steep bank with a dip at the bottom, front wheels hit the dip and the rear suspension unloaded and the whole rig was standing on the stinger for a second then it laid back down on the tires

I vote for the M/T stinger on your rig. It makes it more safe, your :princess: will like that, and it makes it look even more bad ass.:grinpimp:

Haha, nice way of convincing the lady.

Could you take a closer pic of your tire swing out latch. I need to change mine. I did a really bad hack job on it when I first got my cruiser and need to change to make it more functional. I like to looks of the latch. Thanks

I can get it tomorrow for you.
I got it from www.mcmastercarr.com its a de sta co latch. Very common for the swing outs. I believe that is the same one slee uses for his. Make sure you spend the extra and get the LOCKING latch. My last build I DID NOT...accidentally.. and needed to use a retaining strap on it as it kept swingin open.
