Cheapest Carplay and AndroidAuto Retrofit under $300? 2016-2021 LX570

It has an rca input for aftermarket back up camera. How is it triggered? (Forgive me if it’s covered in the video). I imagine it is supposed to wire into the reverse gear signal like other aftermarket head units.

I have an rca running from the camera at the back of my trailer and would love to view that from my dash while on the highway, especially since my mirror extensions cause the side mirrors to collapse in the wind above 60 MPH.

Has anyone tried this unit listed on Amazon? For under $300 it is worth a shot. Worst case if it does not work, returns are easy to Amazon. From the listing my assumption is that this will work on the 2016+ LX570.

EDIT AND UPDATE:

This video is LONG. I ordered the cheapest Retrofit kit to upgrade my 2017 Lexus LX570 and install Apple Carplay and Android Auto. This kit was $289 on Amazon with free shipping. It arrived in 1 day to my door. I had my doubts since other similar kits on the market are anywhere from $600 to $1200. The instructions were terrible and almost non-existent. The wiring was not that easy to figure out due to lack of instructions. And it was my first time taking most of the dash, the screen, and the radio apart and removing them on this 2017 LX570, so it took me some extra time while I was being careful not to break any mounting tabs.
This works on the 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 LX570.

I show all my trial and error in this video, so it is quite long. Make sure to watch the entire video before doing your installation. Because I made a few mistakes along the way that I showed. I thought about cutting those parts out and just showing you the right way to do it. But I thought it would be better to show you all my mistakes as well incase you run into some of the same problems.

In the end the solution is great, and for only $289 it is 1/2 or 1/3 the price of any other solution that comes close. It works with both Apple Iphone and also Android phones. The next/previous buttons still work to skip songs, the answer and hangup buttons on the steering wheel still work to answer phone calls, and the audio quality seems to be good as well. I'm not an audio expert, but it sounds about the same as stock to me.

The exact kit I purchased was this one:

And if you 2016-2021 Land Cruiser guys are feeling adventurous, here is the one with the correct specs for you 16+ LC guys. https://amzn.to/3rNWyz3

You got it bud! I tend to show way too much detail in my videos, but I figure it helps for other people going through the same projects.

looking for help here-
got this installed, but after a little bit, it will just drop and go back to the OEM infotainment, then sometimes come back up to the carplay screen, no intervention on my part with button pressing, is this maybe a connection issue with wifi/BT or similar? i cant get through a normal 1 hour drive without it happening. wonder if there is a software update for these since it has a software update option?

I havent seen any disconnect issues with mine yet. What kind of phone are you using? My wife has a Pixel 7 pro, and her android auto disconnects when passing the same exact spot on the highway and then reconnects, everytime. Did it in her BMW X7 and now the same in her Mercedes EQS. But my iphone 14maxp doesnt disconnect in that area at all. Very odd behaviors sometimes.

We use iphones.
Does it disconnect randomly? Any rhyme or reason to when it disconnects, like similar location, # of minutes of runtime, or anything like that?

not any set minutes, i dont drive the same pattern daily, so its not a spot specific like yours. the phone still says its connected, but the display drops out, comes back randomly, but sometimes the audio doesnt. im not sure if its a bluetooth/wifi connection issue, or if the box is overheating? i have mine in the big empty cavity by the blower box under the dash, i couldnt get my display wires long enough to put it in the kick panel like yours.

Dumb question, but are you sure your phone software is up to date? iOS 16 had some issues with carplay disconnects that were sort of resolved with updates. Also, I notice when I wear my Apple watch I get weird disconnect issues sometimes with other bluetooth devices. But when I wear my Fitbit I don't have those issues. Do you notice the issue while your phone is connected to other devices by chance? Is it plugged into a cable/charger when it disconnects? If so, maybe try disconnecting it from the cable for an entire drive to see if it still disconnects? If you have VPN enabled or "Private Wifi Access" enabled, I have seen that cause disconnect issues as well, may try disabling them to see if that helps.

IOS is up to date, yes i had issues previously due to that. it is plugged up to charge, but the android box doesnt recognize it, only via wireless, ill toss it on the wireless charger next trip and see how it reacts. no vpn on my phone. thanks for the ideas, ill see if any of that solves it

nope, it just seems to be a lost connection because the audio doesnt stop (it runs thru aux tho, via BT) so im gonna try relocating the wifi antenna to see if that helps.

Installed this same exact unit over the weekend following your video. Toughest part of the install was getting the radio back in with all the additional wires and the panel with the vents and clock. Minus the joystick no issues as of yet.

Yup, I had to try a few different ways to get all the wires to fit behind the radio. I found the easiest way for me was to try and position the wires to where they were situated just below the back of the OEM radio as it slid in.

update for everyone on my issues.
screen cutting out frequently - in the settings, change the wifi channel to another one, default is 6, which i think is a default for alot of stuff, so it kept being interfered with. i set mine to 143 or something and the issue isnt there on my test drives. it might pop up on longer drives, but if its infrequent, i can live with it
BT Audio echoing - change the audio setting for EchoChannel from default to LX570 resolved that issue

i still wish this had wired carplay, and technically it does with the harness that it comes with, but it doesnt integrate into the factory plugs, and no way im running a cord out of my glove box or side of my console just for carplay.

overall its a 7/10 - it doesnt do everything i want it to do, but it does what i need it to do.

Many thanks to those sharing their experience with this unit. Question regarding screen mirroring - Assuming screen sharing does work as described in the product details, does the setup allow for said sharing to also display to the factory rear seat screens or does all output from the device only display with the center screen?

I got little ones who will turn on me during long trips if they can’t watch a movie or two.

Great feedback. I'm going to check out that Wifi channel setting to see what mine is set to. I havent had any issues with the connection dropping (iphone 14 pro max), I wonder if mine is set to a different channel or the default.

It only displays on the main screen up front. The rear screens are not effected and will still play whatever DVD you have inserted.

Wasn't sure if you could pull off the mount and frame it. It's good to have options...

Had an issue where screen went black every time it would go into CarPlay mode. Restarted phone and back to normal.

Went on a 3 hour trip to and from over the weekend and had no hiccups. So far so good!
