Finally got around to upgrading the filter that I had sitting in a box for a year.
The old filter looks pretty caked up but surprisingly I was able to blow easily blow air thru it with little of any resistance.
Extended the line with a coupler and more hose so I could add the bend for the drip line.

I recently replaced mine and it looked like yours, I think blowing vs sucking would yield opposite results.

What did you upgrade to? I’m not convinced the auto zone fancy looking breather thing you replaced, and I currently use, offers too much in the way of filtration.

I thought the same but blowing & sucking yielded the same results, no resistance despite the looks.

I'm added this filter and more hose. Someone else posted it a few years back.

Also bought this air filter cover awhile back but did not install yet. Want to make sure all is good and will probably add during the next tire rotation.

Cool, I’ll try both on my next change. Thanks!

I have been getting several codes and will be replacing the Valve Assembly, Vacuum Switching - Toyota (25860-0S010) for the P0441 code and Ordered the components shown in this Thread for the filter, hose and coupler. I also am changing the gas cap

When I got in there, the filter was so clogged it had popped off with the pressure having no place to go (My guess). I am going to replace the Charcoal Filter (Not canister) that will be at the dealer Wednesday

Hopefully all these small fixes will correct my problem and I won't have to drop the tank the replace the Evap canister

The recent install instructions list this as a recommended fix via a service bulletin. Sevice Bulletin 3 recommends adding a prefilter Pre-filter FILTERWEARS K144

First I want to thank @TeCKis300 for all the work here. It is obvious this is the basis of the service bullitins attached to the updated install instructions

I replaced the filter and the Charcoal filter today. Also the Gas cap

I used bailing wire to help attach the filter and keep it stationary while moving

Now the wait over time to see if it corrected the issue. No future codes

Glad I could help. You might try to high loop it a bit further to minimize water ingress.

Anybody considering routing the vent to the filler area with plumbing something like this?

Plan to spray coat the barb fitting to the filler and nut black, to make it blend in.

For those looking to upgrade pod filters- Get a UNI brand pod filter from a dirt bike shop and wrap it in the UNI bulk foam sheet material (or cut apart an old foam dirt bike filter and zip tie it over the base filter). Oiled foam is probably the the best dust protection media available.

Dirt bike shops should be able to get these any parts catalogue if they don't stock it. You can also ziptie a prefilter/bootie/sock (AKA filter skin) over the foam wrap to keep the sand and big stuff out of the filter media. Most offroad race bike shops should be able to set you up if you describe what you are looking for.

The 5/8 line that’s in the service bulletin posted by @Romer… what type of hose should this be?

I’m assuming it’s something special that can handle fuel fumes and not your run of the mill automotive heater hose.

i haven't had any filling up issues, but i am getting CELs on the regular for the evap system.

I have had fuel boiling a few times. One time in particular was pretty bad. I didn't know it was a thing so I had no idea what to watch for, had the stereo on and by the time I realized I had an issue it was pretty escalated. I wondered if the boiling caused some other issue within the system causing the CEL. I cleaned the LRA filter and the CEL went away, but it's come back within a few weeks without any dusty travel. I'd read the fuel cap can go bad causing the CEL. I have one of those on order. Wondering if I need to take a look at the Charcoal Canister or something.

What's your code?

I’ve had gas pouring out the tank and down the mud flaps. And I don’t have an aux tank. The following morning I could hear the
Evap canister running when I woke up at camp, presumably trying to purge fuel. I did not get any lights from this

Fast forward one year and last summer I got codes multiple times when driving throug Wyoming and in Yellowstone. I think mine were from a slow pump which was trickling in fuel and didn’t shut off in time, combined with towing and my ass end being lower than normal. I got codes a few times but eventually they stopped.

My point is if you’re getting codes it’s probably because your charcoal canister has been getting fuel in it. Initially it could purge ok, then it started having issues. It might eventually stop after a few hundred miles and a couple tanks and code resets, but my suspicion is once you’re getting codes it’s On the way out and eventually your codes will become permanent when it can purge them anymore

Shoot, that’s not what I wanted to hear. I guess it is what it is. Thanks for the info.

IANAM (I am not a mechanic), I just play one on the internet. 🤣

I’m not sure if your symptoms are the same as mine. I haven’t yet had to swap my charcoal canister, but I’m slowly becoming aware that day may come. FWIW my code was P0441, but it definitely started after what I believe was an overfill combined with trailer-induced rear axle squat, it appeared occasionally a few times over about 10 days with multiple tank fills, then went away. No obvious boiling fuel in this case, but occasionally get the boiling gas smell at high elevation (10k feet or more).

If your code keeps coming back, sadly yes it’s probably the charcoal canister. Order one from Serra during one of the southeast 25% off sales.

I've had the P0441 error too. Codes also appear then disappear.
