Charcoal Canister - Great Option!

Success! This canister worked out great on my fj40 too! I had to join the carb vent to the tank vent line but it works great so far. Just went to the gas station and absolutely no pressure build up! Also the gas smell is gone. I also think it may be running a little smoother too as I think the high tank pressure was affecting my fuel pressure to the carb. Thank you for this modification!

So I see two sets of problems - the first is fuel boiling as addressed by replacing the CC. The second is fuel vapor smell that I think is clearly caused by a lower engine heat threshold due to fuel mixtures, requiring greater cooling capacity to keep temps at 185 or below or the CC will vent the excess vapor causing in-cabin issues at slow speeds. As Rick points out, his temps were at 185 with no issues but another 80 was running 210 with a strong fuel smell. That's the cooling system, not the CC.

All of this observation is at relatively high elevation, where the problems seem to be more persistent, but it seems the underlying issue is that our engines were designed to run at temps that are higher than current ethanol based fuel mixtures can handle at higher altitudes and the solution is to optimize cooling capacity to prevent steady operating temps at 195-210* and keep them more in the 175-185* range.

I think you may be onto something. I used the Autozone canister and that fixed the pressure problem but I got the fuel smell on trail runs, climbing Mt. Antero for example. I did the temp gauge mod and found I was getting really hot on slow steep climbs. I believe that problem was original fan clutch fluid so I changed it out to 10,000 hobby oil. It's been too cool since I did this to check it out and haven't done any slow steep climbs.

Just as an FYI, I've had similar problems as the rest with one important twist that is relevant to the bottom hose.

This summer my canister purged fuel out the breather tube while sitting in the driveway. It was hot, easily 100ºF in the sun, I'm at 6000 ft and I had just filled up (both tanks hold a total of 44L gal - my tanks are interconnected). The engine was hot from the drive home so if it had purged into the engine compartment not at the frame it may, MAY, have caused a fire. I lost maybe a 1/2 pint of fuel total. After this incident I had fuel smells from the gas door area and pressure build up in the tank - venting took minutes. After a few weeks the problem seems to have gone a way.

Regardless, AC-Delco 215-75 is now 43.53 from Amazon with free shipping if you bring the total to $50 with something else. I just ordered one just to be proactive.

Cheers
Chris

I encountered this problem several times last summer between 7-10k ft. One was bad enough on a tough climb that gas was spewing from the filler cap. It even happened this past weekend while cruising the Dome Plateau, UT at 5k ft, 45degF, with only a 1/4 tank of fuel.

It's possible that the filler cap isn't venting, so I'll start with that cheap solution first. But I have a feeling I'll be hitting the amazon button in the long run.

I have done the canister replacement, and the problems went away, I even got better gas milage and better performance from my engine!

Highly recommended!

IIRC the filler cap is designed only to "take in" air, and the charcoal canister is where any outgassing fumes are held, then ingested by the engine. This is the crux of a closed system that no fumes are vented to the atmosphere.

If the filler cap is broken either you would have a vacuum situation in your tank, or no pressure whatsoever, which may throw a CEL on an OBDII rig (which yours is not).

I ordered the Autozone VC 120 canister in the first post today and should have it early next week. Hopefully this fixes the pressure issue in my tank. Not looking for any performance or mileage gains, just would like the system to work like it was designed to.

Did a month or so ago, works great

New gas cap too.

Is this one the same as the VC 120 from autozone? I'm gonna have to replace mine soon. It purges like 10 seconds when I fill gas:hhmm:

I installed the autozone canister at lunch today. The install was fairly straight forward but I don't like how close it sits to the fuse box, makes it kind of a pain to get the lid on and off. But for the cost savings vs the OEM one its not that big of an issue.

I have a 1989 FJ62 EFI with the same charcoal cannister issues.

Can anyone tell me if the aftermarket replacement that you guys have found will fit my rig?

Thank You,

What is the height and diameter of your stock canister?

Well, we installed this canister tonight along with new hoses. We ordered the BWD Part # CP1018 from O'Reilly Auto. (Same as the VC120) It fit just like described in this post on our 1994 FZJ80 with 224K miles.

The canister says it's made by Rochester on the top of it and went in without too much issue. It also has a lifetime warranty so if it ever fails we can swap it out.

After a test drive the pressure at the gas filler is gone, the gas smell is gone, and the truck runs a lot smoother. It was cool out tonight so we'll see how it does tomorrow in the heat. (Should get up in the 80s tomorrow, that's all it took to start smelling gas.)

Hopefully it will keep on working but I am proud and want to say thanks that the OP has found this repair. We'll report back eventually to let you know how it's working.

Is it normal to have a 1 or 2 seconds of pressure release sound upon removing the gas cap for fill up? I have no fuel smell like you guys have. My other MDX does not have any pressure sound at all as compared to the LX450.

FYI, the one I ordered was not as easy a job to swap out as I had expected. I ended up removing the upper bracket completely, moving the lower bracket up, drilling a new hole for that bracket, and I sawed off the bulb end of the tank side attachment. It was more finageling and surgery than I expected it to be, but it's in there now and pretty secure. I used a longer thin bolt which was causing the bracket to crush the can a bit when I tightened it, but it's pretty solid now.

And, while I was at it I drilled out the hole on my battery ground wire and securely attached it to the mounting bolt on the main bracket support assembly. I had been just pinching it in there ever since I did the pos/neg battery side swap when I went to the Sears Platinum battery.

I have yet to install, but I got mine for $35.99 from O'Reillys. They list for $54, but Pep Boys quoted $35.99 and O'Reilly's matched the price. I hope to install Friday. I will let y'all know if I run across any issues that haven't been brought up.
