I've done some stupid stuff in my life but this tops the list. Heading home from hunting this morning, I felt like the 4L60e wasn't in overdrive due to the sloppy shift box. So I absent-mindedly nudged it forward and it went straight into reverse. At 65mph.

Loud explosion, pull over. Driveline separated, oil pouring from rear diff. Tow truck on the way.

What can I expect to replace besides the driveline? Any hope for the gears or transmission?

I am heartbroken.

Snowflake version:
Nothing wrong, see the bright side, feel happy, celebrate, hakuna matata.
Mud version:
idiot you are fu..ed with a capital CK , good luck

Bright side is I'm adding a rear locker now that I have to crack the dif.... Might as well, right?

Without rubbing salt into the wound, who did the conversion and why didn't they do it properly?

The LS engines and 4L60e transmissions have protections from going into reverse when moving forward. Any half decent mechanic doing the conversion should have kept these safety features.

Anyway hopefully it's nothing too major...

I bought it with the conversion already done. Shifter was always sloppy and was on my list of things to do...

So let's assume I need a new tranny.... Any recs out there?

How are we supposed to know what you need to fix if you posted no pictures and practically no information on what’s actually broken?
What does “driveline separated” mean?

I want to see some carnage.

I didn't realize you can go in reverse when moving forward. That sucks man. Time for a manual transmission, it's cheaper, better and did I mention better?

Can you elaborate on this. I don’t recall anyone ever mentioning this in their conversions

Please, by all means, elaborate.

Assuming the conversion was done using the factory LS computer (and not something after market, which would be strange as the LS Ecus are brilliant even for tuning) they have built in protecting for preventing reverse at speed. It uses the VSS sensor at the back of the gearbox to measure wheel speed and from memory it kicks in around 10kph. In the manual (T56, TR6060) it physically engages the lockout solenoid preventing reverse, on the 4L60e/4L65e it won't engage reverse until the speed drops (electronically limited). The only way I can see this happening is if someone has done a conversion and hacked out parts they didn't understand. I've done a bunch of LS conversions/builds and the electronics are pretty simple if you spend a little time on them, no reason why every feature can't be transplanted (cruise control, security immobiliser, emission controls etc).

I feel for the OP though as something as simple as accidentally moving the gear shifter shouldn't be able to cause damage.

Yeah, this is my best guess.

Ouch, brother .sorry.
Good luck and keep us posted .

So basically the second reluctor ring wasn't used to tell the cpu that it is actually going. On a 4l60e it is on the adapter that advanced makes with a 4l80e 4x4 transmission it has one forward of the transmission and a spot for a second vss but in my case with the conversion i am doing the reluctor ring isn't installed in the transmission it has to be added because it gets the rear vss from the transfer case rear output shaft. The vss can be added to the back of the transfer case input shaft with an adapter the only thing about that is its not on the output shaft of the transfer case witch means when you put it 4wlow it won't change the shift points of the transmission. May be able to use an adapter at the transfer case at the speedometer output i have seen that used by someone on here just can't remember who or if it did the job.
Hope you get to the bottom of it op lots of things could be wrong.
On another note i did this same thing on purpose in my buddys truck when my x was driving major argument i was drunk and wanted out of the truck she wouldn't stop so my dumb drunk ass threw it in to park it didn't lock up until we were almost stopped. I got out she drove off not the end of the story but it was not a smart thing for me to do

You can do the conversion without the VSS. Conversion takes too long, they want to get it done, details like VSS get omitted.

Still no pictures of broken parts.
