How the updates happen is part of the frustration. They're supposed to happen via WiFi...

Settings - System - turn on WiFi - make sure the VLine is connected to your WiFi network and has a good signal (go back to System) System - Updates - Check for updates - download and install software and firmware updates.

... but sometimes they won't download. Apparently, if you're behind on a few updates, it makes updating more difficult. You then get this: "Error: write file error; Permission denied." Then you have go to your computer, download the file, rename the file, format a Fat32 flash drive, save the file to the flash drive... connect the flash drive... there's more, but you get the point.

Again, I've read and been told that the key is not getting behind in the updates.

The area GROM could Improve on is the updates. There seem to be a lot (!) and without any push notifications, I never know when to update the system. I suppose we're just supposed to check for updates weekly.

Despite the glitches and incessant need for updates, it may still be the best option for factory-like CarPlay
Thank you for sharing your experience, we appreciate it. The update notifications appear when the system is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi. Without a connection to the internet, it is not possible to push the notifications. Our engineering team will look if there is a work-around for it.

I am old and technically deficient, how are updates physically performed?
The updates are via Wi-Fi(connecting the system to the internet), here is the how-to video:

Anyone seen the newest (albeit insignificant) glitch - the vertical lines on the sidebar menu? This started happening a couple weeks ago and shows up about 10% of the time. The lines don't go away while the power's on and usually don't reappear the next time the system's powered up. Also, everything appears to function normally.

aaaand back to glitching daily. I had a good few weeks. But, the GROM is grouchy again. Won't pair, then crashes. If I leave it alone for a few minutes, it does this - try to connect, crash, try to connect, crash - a few times that sorts itself out.

Struggles to connect:

Then crashes:

I was hoping there was an update. Nope.

I've had my Vline VL2 for almost 2 years now. It's far any away my favourite (and sometimes most irritating) interior mod.
I've found that when there are issues, unpairing everything, performing a reset, then running updates has always fixed things. It is annoying, but wireless carplay that just works is such a huge quality of life improvement for me. The post directly above me was one of the last issues I had. It was solved using the method I just talked about.

I would love to be proactively alerted when an update is ready so that I can do that before any potential issues arise.

I’ve gotten to know my radio fuse really well lately (to restart when it freezes) and that has been a pretty good help. Mine is definitely not the best but it does seem to be less touchy than yours @Manhattan

The big problem mine has is if the temperature gets down around 45 it won’t start until it warms up

Great idea for motivated youngsters who are looking for challenges- I just simply don’t have time for the maintenance of effort to keep one of these working on my 2006. So i crawl back into my cave and wait in Spring!

What is significant difference between LEXUS GX470 2003-2004 VLite VT2 vs LEXUS GX470 2003-2004 VLine? Is it just the ability to install apps directly onto Grom? Has anyone used VLite V2?

The difference between the VLine VL2 and VLite VT2 is that the VLine VL2 allows you to install apps directly to the system, and use CarPlay / Android Auto. The VLite VT2 is for CarPlay / Android Auto only; you will always need your phone.
Installing the apps directly on the system and using the system stand-alone has advantages, as there is more freedom regarding which apps to use. There are also some extra features available on VLine VL2, such as HDMI-In and HDMI-Out. Here is the comparison table:

We can only push the update notifications when the system is connected to the internet. We recommend connecting the system to the internet via Wi-Fi periodically to check for updates.

We also strongly suggest upgrading to Android 12 for better performance:

As for CarPlay connection, reset it as shown here:

If your iPhone received a recent iOS update, it could affect CarPlay connectivity.

If you continue experiencing difficulties with the GROM product, contact our technical team at Support and Questions - https://gromaudio.com/support.html We will help.

Thank you. Based on the comparison . i think Lite seems to be a pretty good option for a 2003 LC.

Yes, and you will get wireless CarPlay and Android Auto.

Hi. Can you please let me know if there is audio sound quality difference between the Vline V2 and Vlite V2? In my search, i came across this thread, here on IH8MUD. ( Has anyone used the Grom Vlite VT2 CarPlay/Android auto only unit? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/has-anyone-used-the-grom-vlite-vt2-carplay-android-auto-only-unit.1305771/page-2) and almost everyone is complaining about the sound quality degradation after installing Vlite V2. Has this been addressed via updates? Thank you.

There is no difference in the quality of the VLine VL2 and VLite VT2; both provide high-quality sound now. There was a temporary glitch regarding the sound quality attributed to the specific VLite VT2 models. But it was resolved shortly after it was discovered.
