Norcal, not on fire but it was darn close.
I found a smog tech who suggested after I rebuilt my carb and new cat that the computer is making the carb to rich that's they my hydrocarbon is off the charts.

He is booked up so Is there some chip or sensor or bluetooth dongle I can get to figure this out?

When starting up for the first time in weeks it blows smoke then after that it just has a very rich gas smell.

Im not sure when this guy can fit me in, he is cheap and I spoke to a few guys who already said he is awesome and solved their issues cheap and easy

No computer. No bluetooth. No OBD port. Welcome to the 1980's!

Is there a muffler sensor or anything?
I have done everything to my motor (250K) runs ok.
1, MAJOR tune up, 2. Wires, plugs rotor, two oil changes in 300 miles, filters, new fuel, new cat,
DANGIT

'Fraid not. All I can offer is the generic advice to use FSM procedures to make sure all smog gear is up to snuff, choke not sticking, valves and timing set properly, etc. Rebuilt your own carb, you say?

I paid $650 to get the carb done plus MY PARTS, and he did the valves.
He has his own smog computer/

He said the jet was altered in my carb and wanted $100 more after he worked on it I was mad thought he could have called me during the job,. I dont know what is true but he has a good rep as the "Go to carb man"

Research the denatured alcohol "trick"?

I'd bet money your expert carb guy has adjusted the carb to run outside of the idle circuit. Let the truck idle. Unclip the little electrical connector at the carb and see if the truck dies. If it does, not sure what to tell you. It has been done properly. If the truck continues to run with this connector disconnected, you are getting excess fuel around the idle circuit and it will need to be adjusted and/or set up properly. The Idle Control Solenoid in the carb provides all the fuel you need at idle. Anything more than that is washing down your cylinders and gassing out the exhaust.

Maybe that's what the carb guy was referring to by the computer causing the rich mix since it's the only electrical component on the thing. I've never tried tuning one with the ICS closed, might be fun just to see what things would have to be tweaked to get it to idle and run without the idle circuit. At any rate, did he tell you what size jet he put in or how the other was altered?

larger jet, I do not know why. I went back at the DMV records and it passed, Passed, FAILED, passed and the owner actually owned a smog shop so you know how that went down. I have no idea why a Californian carb would be altered or why any one would do it.

Do you suggest I flat bed the truck to the card repair man and have him adjust the card to the point it wont drive then flat bed to the smog station? haha, that would be "rich" pun intended.

He could tune it up again and fix the jet im sure for another $100. It actually has a little gas smell when I drive.

Yeah something is up and/or he is trying to hose you for money. Time to grab those FSMs and start going through piece by piece to see about getting it to run properly PER THE MANUAL. Sound like someone tinkered with something they shouldn't have at some point or made undo alterations to the carb. Get @orangefj45 (Georg) on the phone and talk with him. Worse comes to worse you can take it down to him (in stockton) and have him troubleshoot.
