Quick question for those familiar with Toyota split wheels. What am I doing wrong with reassembly... haha. It probably took me 2 hours to snap 5 rings back on. Lots of stomping, sweating, swearing, jumping, finally got them go to together (obviously, pics above are of the completed wheels) but it really seems like I'm having more trouble than most.

Here's my issue. The 255/85R16's are so tall that with the rim and tire flat on the ground, the outside/upper bead doesn't sit on the rim, it's just hanging in the air. So as I kick the ring on and work my way around, it hangs up on the bead right at the end. If the tire sidewall was narrower I think I wouldn't have any issues. But reading lots of split wheel threads, 255/85 seems like a fairly common size. I'm using lots of soap and water and once it all gets together, it seems like it works well.

The easiest way I found to get everything to click was putting a rubber wheel chock under the rim itself, but not the tire, so the rim was lifted off the ground a little bit. It still wasn't easy and everything wanted to wobble, so it was quite a balancing act. I'm sure my wife got a good laugh watching me from inside.

One other issue, one of the beads won't snap back into place. The other 4 jumped right up with 5-10psi of pressure, but this one is about 90% seated and won't go any more. It has a tiny gap that I can stick my key into that runs for about 4 inches. I even pumped it up to 40psi and no-go. I tried debeading it, relubing it, and airing up again. Still no go. Could the powder from the powdercoating be causing an issue? It's clean with no rust or debris. The ring appears to have a slightly larger gap where the two ends meet than on my other 4 wheels, which I thought was odd. Rings don't go to specific wheels do they? I hope not, I didn't keep them matched pairs...

Suggestions?

Edit, I took it apart and found a little bit of extra powder flakes along the edge of the rim and split ring. Cleaned it up with a wire brush, put it all back together with lots of tire lube and it popped together fine.

Registration paperwork arrived today! Insured it no problem through USAA. Going to the dmv after lunch, hoping it all goes smooth.

Edit, DMV gave me a temp tag and I have to bring the truck in for a VIN inspection. Other than that it appears the paperwork is in order, and seems relatively straightforward. I'll report back soon!

I was able to find an Australian wrecker on eBay willing to send my windows :) $300 shipped... Can't really complain about that. My window frame had some rust on it too, so I just had them ship the entire window and frame.

In 3-5 days they should be here. Sweet. Fingers crossed they survive the journey!

No big changes... Did oil change, coolant flush, all new belts, radiator hoses, heater hoses, pulled the turbo piping and cleaned it, new turbo couplers, new pcv lines, new fuel lines. Runs about the same. Lol. But at least I have peace of mind that it's all in good working order! Tightened down the valve cover bolts. Had a slight leak, we'll see if that solves it.

What tube size are using with your Toyo, and where you get them?

7.50R16 tube with Tr440 valve is what is currently on there. That's what came with the wheels. I also ordered a spare set of Carlisle 7.50R16 tubes with a TR75A valve for radial tires. The flaps were also Carlisle 16R6.50/7.00/7.50/8.25. Got the new ones from Summit Racing.

Took it for a quick drive through the woods by my house. Feels pretty good and solid in the steering when driving down the road and off road too, but when sitting still in the driveway turning the wheels back and forth it definitely has a clunk. I'm not terribly familiar with Toyota solid axles, but it feels almost like what bad ball joints would feel like on an IFS truck. Thoughts?

I think the next step is I'm going to rebuild the front and rear axles. New bearings and seals. It's leaving little wet spots on the driver side front behind the wheel and passenger side rear outside the wheel in my garage, and of course the clunk I talked about. Is there anyone who sells a kit to do this or do I need to find all the individual parts?

Picture from yesterday :)

I have the time tested trick to get you out of trouble with your split rims... go tubeless :)

On a more serious note, congratulations on acquiring the troopy.

Looking great!….I'm concerned for your well being and having to air down to enter/leave garage….Too stressful….If it becomes too much I'm here for you. just say the word and I will promptly fly down and drive the too tall rig back to my house.

Haha, so I filled up both tanks with diesel and now I don't need to air down! It clears by 1/8 inch or so. I think once I put the steel drawers/supplies in the back and a winch on the front I should be OK :) Thanks for the offer though!

Or call Onur :)

PS / EDIT: I have been asked why I suggested Onur when our firm is an importer of Terrain Tamer knuckle kits. This is true and we stock a full range of kits for any LC from late 60s through late 90s. The fine print is that we are wholesalers, not retailers. While we have sold direct in our first couple months of operation, we have not done so for quite a while - since we have signed up shops and resellers as wholesale parteners. Any of our sales in North America are through an installing shop or authorized reseller like Land Cruiser Parts & Consulting (Onur). He will take care of ya!
