Outside of Ebay? I think the only thing Ebay protects is that they guarantee you will
receive your vehicle. I purchased my 2002 LX via Ebay but had to wire the rest
before they would ship. If the seller will allow an inspection and you are going to
fly out and pick up and pay when you arrive and inspect yourself, sounds legit to me.

I have also purchased an Isuzu Trooper via Ebay. This time it was different than
with my LX. The auction timed out without meeting reserve so I contacted seller
and offered $3000. Wife and I drove to Stauton, VA and made deal at the sellers
work location.

When dealing with an individual be sure and get the Title signed by the seller
and notarized. I didn't get it notarized but I had the seller sign a Bill of Sale
form I took with me.
Thanks man, didn't realize the eBay 'guarantee' was nothing.

Looked at a 05 thundercloud metallic with 158k miles with an extensive service history. A few paint blemishes nothing crazy beside a 3 inch scrape on the front bumper, interior was almost perfect. It has some surface rust on the frame but nothing serious. The skids and gas tank straps were fine. Drove like a dream, which was not the case with the 3 others I test drove. It'll be 13.5 after taxes. Jumping on it

Sounds nice! Good luck! Waiting for pics.

Was this in Orlando by chance? If so, I was wondering how it lasted for sale as long as it did. I bought a GX last year and am on the hunt for a 100, not ready to pull the trigger yet. But that one looked like a great deal.

No actually it was in Brooklyn NY of all places. I originally had no intention going to see it but sent the seller a message and after seeing pics decided why not, glad I did. 2nd and 3rd row seats look like they've never been sat in. Floor mats are spotless. It's a northern truck but the best I've seen. Pics tomorrow.

Gotta take some better pics but here it is.

Hello Buying/Selling.

I'm on the fence about a current candidate '04 LX. It has ~200k miles on it. Exterior 9/10 - some chips and scratches but no dents or fading. Interior 7.5/10 - well used, some carpet stains, not abused just not nice enough for a 8 or 9. I honestly do not care that much about the Interior but some people say it's a good indication of the owner's take on overall maintenance. Washington and California car, baby surface rust around some undercarriage bolts but Zero on any frame/panel/drain/creases/etc. 2 owner vehicle, first had it for ~15k miles on a lease or fleet or something, second owner had it the rest of the time.

My issue is that only about 25% of the 200k has any maintenance history via Carfax. drivers.lexus has Zero history on the car, NONE. The 25% is from 49k to 98k with consistent, 5-7k oil changes but no TB in that span. Open up the engine bay and there is a TB sticker at ~165k on Oct 2013.

Price is right for an '04 WITH good to great maintenance history. Drives nice enough, straight, pulls strong, CDL, 4-Lo all works fine for the tiny bit that I tried it.

Is it possible that all of the other maintenance was shadetree and just never recorded? Any other suggestions I might not be thinking about?

Thanks,
rj

You know what is interesting about this topic, if you go to the first post from 2009 to today the price has not changed that much for a clean low mileage truck. There are cheap beaters out there but clean and low mileage still holds its own over the years.

The no history on the Lexus site would bother me. Its pretty common that a new vehicle under warranty has some service at a dealership.

I find history missing from Toyota and/or Lexus web pages on some. Even my 01 LC doesn't have history online, but Toyota Dealer pulled for me years ago.

Sound like you did a good inspection. Just check for leaks and the head gasket. Coolant leaks often lead to head gasket leak.

I'd go for it!

Anyone have experience/success selling a built 100 series? And any luck getting more than blue book for it?

Really gonna depend on your region, market and what you are asking. "Built" can be subjective to what you believe that means and what others have in mind. Comes down to negotiating with a potential buyer.

I have a pretty lengthy build thread detailing what I've done to my unit. I'm just curious if there's any examples of people getting $25-30k for these when they invested that or much more. I see people asking crazy amounts for lifted Jeeps and Trucks that make me scratch my head, so there's obviously buyers out there.

Exactly... It is just finding said buyer. You are probably on the best site for that, but if you are looking to expand your capabilities, sites like CL, AutoTrader, Cars.com, TrueCar, CarGurus, etc. all can help "spread the word" when selling.

High asking prices may just be evidence of deluded sellers and not sales. Most people want to build their own rig, that's where the fun is.

That's exactly why I'm asking the question: Has ANYONE actually sold a built up rig for more than Bluebook price?

yes, the point is that on trucks like this it’s worth what the guy in front of you is willing to pay. The reality is that this is a narrow market, and by selling a “built” truck you have narrowed your market further. I’m trying tofind his username, but the guy who was the beta rig for TJM to bring back the T17 sold last year and he was built, as in bumpers, sliders, skids, drawers, etc. all pretty high end.

when you say your truck is “built” what does that mean? That means a lot of things to a lot of people.

PS, blue book on these trucks is basically irrelevant now, too many private party sales to track it.

I wasn't saying they can't or don't sell for more than "book". But you see a lot of people, especially Jeeps, who are asking about what they have invested including shop labor, which is not realistic. If people are going to spend that kind of money they usually want to design their own. I think people will pay something for add-ons, but they generally want a deep discount. Building a truck is not normally a good investment. Andrew St. Pierre White apparently does it, but that's on the really high end and he's established a name for himself over decades.
