Hey all. First post! Could use an opinion on a 99...

173k miles
1 owner
Rear locker
Lived in OR its whole life
$6998 at a dealer. Price negotiable.

it’s in super rough condition with few service records and rust. My question is this: for a newbie is this something to walk away from? Would I be better off paying more for a rig in better shape?

At minimum it would need the following (my quick ballpark):
- timing + serpentine belt / water pump $1000
- flush / drain all fluids +/- $200
- spark plugs + ignition cable replacement - $500
- refinish leather seats / wheel / shift $1000
- body work +$2000

I’ll probably go ahead and pull the trigger on a PPI and start calling body shops for quotes. Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

I have looked at the one personally... It's the one in Salem correct? Not worth more than maybe $4k. There is TONS wrong on the interior, no history for the dents (no reported accidents) so you dont know what all is going on with it. Plus if you look at the front, it looks like the hood and both fenders have been replaced as the colors are slightly off. I offered the $4k but they told me the lowest they would go was $6k. Hard Pass.

I would pass based on the body let alone the mechanical shape. For a little more you will save yourself a ton of money in the long run. Even at $3,500 you would end up dumping a bunch of money in it unless you want it for a farm/ranch truck and don't care about the appearance. The running boards don't even match and fender damage on both sides. Your body work at $2k seems low, probably closer to $5k-$6k minimum. I had a fender replaced and painted with bumper prep and respray at it was over $2k and that was 8 years ago.

Thanks @gregnash. It is the one in Salem. My target price would have been below 4K so since they won’t budge it’s a no go. Eye opening to see such a poorly maintained truck with clean CARFAX.

@Shafdawg I've seen better for $6k, just have to keep looking and be ready to jump.

What rust? The body and interior are enough to make me walk away. Clearly they didn't take care of it.

Plug the VIN into the Toyota owners link site and see how they handled service. If the exterior/interior is an example, they probably didn't treat the internals right either...

That PPI money is better spent on a vehicle worth purchasing.
Agreed. No need to be dropping $ on some PPI if it’s not even a contender. Happy to play the waiting game

update: found this silver 99 LC in Bend,OR via Marketplace.

238,xxx
no rust (lived in OR for entire life)
rear locker
great interior condition (tan)

mods (this wasn't even a search criteria for me but definitely an added bonus):
ipf auxillary lights front & rear
arb front bumper
old man emu suspension

according to @fzj80joe (thanks for the intel!) seller had it listed on and off for awhile dropping the price as low as $7700. so I was a little skeptical but the guy was super responsive and provided additional records where CARFAX and Toyota Owners fell short.

great service history, here are the highlights:
- timing belt/water pump/thermostat @205K
- replaced rear brakes @ 231k
- new tires @237k
- spark plugs @140k
- transfer case service @180k
- rear/front diff fluid change @180k

I went ahead and called a mechanic to do a remote PPI. It revealed a leaky inner boot on the front passenger CV axle, front differential leak at both seals and turn signal housing replacement. Mechanic commented on how refreshing it was to see an older LC is such good shape.

Plan is to check it out Sunday and hopefully bring it home. Was willing to wait a lot longer but this seems like a great deal. Mileage is a little higher than I had hoped for but its been well maintained. Thoughts?

Just got a 2000 LC for $6800 asking price was $9800 guy was hurting for cash.

Zero rust Texas truck it’s whole life. 255K miles had service records going back 5 years from the local Toyota dealership

Some recent prices shared here...

Glad I could help in some way, It's also really good for me to see what these are selling for since I'm helping list one for a friend.

I’m looking for a hundred series for my daughter—it’ll be her daily, and will most see highway use to/from school, etc. Also, it will be added into the “mod garage” and eventually get a mild lift, tires, winch, etc. sho she can accompany me and my ‘96 80 series into the wilds. I don’t know a TON about the hundos, thus my request for your input.

I’ve recently come across a very clean 1998 Land Cruiser with 137k miles (one-three-seven). Local PNW rig its whole life, so no rust. Has the factory locker. Asking price is $9k, with some room to haggle. Thoughts on the value of this rig? Are the early LCs decent compared to the latter rigs, or should I hold out for a 5 speed trans, etc...?

Have you actually seen that one? I went, and It looked like there was oil seepage at the engine, the body and interior were kind of rough from up close. The guy didn't seem to want to deal much either. There was repaired damage to the front passenger side, looked like radiator was replaced. Low miles and cheap though...

I haven’t seen this one in person but the little research I did revealed 6 owners, 2 accidents and a probable odometer reset.

You can check vehicle service history (for free) via the myCARFAX app in addition to Toyota Owners website.

This truck in particular has a lot of service records but the odometer red 239,240 in 2015 and then 120,643 in 2017. No evidence of even an engine rebuild so proceed with caution.

I have not seen it in person—hoping to head up tomorrow to check it out. Thanks a bunch for the info!

Why bother? 239k miles in 2015. You never live that down. The guy doesn't even claim "no rust". He claims "normal" rust for the age, which is likely quite bit of rust. Look at the all OR rust in post 3519. Your climate might be relatively low rust compared to some others but it is not no rust.

If you’re looking at dealers in the Seattle area this might be more promising:

like many dealer trucks, little maintenance history. no record of timing belt / water pump being replaced. have you been looking at private party too?

Dealers, especially if they are strictly used car, can be a bit sketchy. Get as much information as you can and go look at the vehicle.
Keep hunting and keep and eye on the classifieds here. Stuff pops up all the time, and it is definitely worth while to travel for a vehicle.
