Owned my 99 LC for 14 months now, love it, but I'm no mechanic by any stretch of the means. I've been a full blow cruiser addict, though, ever since joining the club and read constantly the various issues concerning our rigs. In doing so, can't say I've read much, or anything, about blown head gaskets on a 100 (plenty in the "80s" section). Do a few searches and perhaps that will answer your question.

Several of us have had front diffs blow out. There are several good threads here explaining the circumstances in which it occurred. Knowing the typical cause will reduce the likelihood of finding yourself in a similar situation. I moderatly wheel my LC and have not had an issue with diffs. (my rig just flipped 130k miles).

Good service history and timing belt/water pump around 90-100k miles is a good indicator of the previous owners attention. I believe the service manual will recommend another belt/pump change at 180k.

goodluck

I have a '99 with 238K, a big chunk of which has been towing a 6000# race trailer in mid summer. Never a problem with overheating [engine or trans] and never a problem with head gaskets. In fact, I dont recall much discussion on this entire board about head gasket failure, so not sure how reliable that 'known issue' you mention might be.

What's true about all Al engines is that they don't survive overheating very well. If some dumbass has dumped the coolant and kept driving all bets are off. Run Forest, run!

Yeah I saw that one too on Kijiji. It has been for sale for some time. He lowered his price and has something like 1600 page visits. Too far away for me but it doesn't seem bad at all if you compare it to the other ones out there:

Like here
And one in BC: here
And Ontario: here (what's with the japanese mirror ?)

Also a couple of fake one out there so beware!

Thanks for the info guys.
APKhaos, I just asked if the head gaskets were known to fail after certain mileage, like for example the Subaru H4 engines. For Subaru it is a known issue, and pretty common no matter how well the car was maintained.
It's nice to find out that such an issue does not exist with the 100 LC.
Thank you.

98' vs 2000, Couple Questions

I sold the 4runner and have been searching like crazy for the right LC or LX.
I've found a White Cruiser in Texas with 150k miles. All stock in above average condition (although I have not inspected in person). No service records avail, but the seller says it's cleaner than most he sells. Price is $12k and he might take $11,500. Haven't made an offer. Here it is: 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser Sunroof,3rd Seats, Nicest You Will Find $12,998 - Reynolds Auto Group Plano Texas 75074

My other option is a 2000 dark grey stock w/ 150k miles. I have not called on this one yet and it would take some mods to get it where I want with tires, slight lift, and such. Here it is: 2000 Toyota Landcrusier 4x4 Gray Tan Leather "Loaded"

Final option is in the FS section and on CL. It's a 98' Grey and has shocks, diff drop, coils, and 295 M/T's that are near new. It has a palm size dent in the liftgate and will show more wear due to age. Here it is: https://forum.ih8mud.com/vehicles-trailers-sale-wanted/579232-1998-land-cruiser-texas.html

First off I hope it's ok to post these "which one" questions here vs the for sale section.
I have read a bunch about the differences ATRAC vs diff locks, "weaker" diff in the 98' and 99' and so on. I have also read some on the transmission issues in the 2000's...SO, what to do?
What would you do in my shoes? In a nut shell I have 15k or less to spend and would like to do tires and spacers in the rear at the very least.
Would you bite on the less expensive 98' with lockers? Or hold out for a 2000 or 2001 with less miles and ATRAC? I do NOT off road hardcore, but will be in some sticky mud during duck season and playing off road on weekends.
Thanks for any help! I have looked at so many cruiser's my head is about to explode!!

Oh, and I have almost always owned white vehicles...they NEVER show scratches, unless it's bad. I worry about keeping the grey scratch-free and clean. Is that a concern? I wash frequently, but can say for sure black is not an option. Will grey be as bad as black?

I believe Atrac is the step down from lockers.

98 = no dual life support...

Afaik, there was no factory front locker, so the front would still be an open system. Atrac on the 100 is actually a very competent system if you use it correctly and allows you to still steer the vehicle without it loading up. Somewhere here is a great vid & tutorial.

I posted in the other thread also...although there might be more attention here.
Am I right in saying most of the front diff blow outs were due to semi hardcore off roading?
I do like that ATRAC, I had it on my 4runner as well. Having said that I don't NEED either one, just nice to have for sticky situations.
Looks like there are several possible buys in the Dallas area. I can get a one way ticket from Little Rock for only$69 which is great! I have a buddy in Dallas that can pick me up. Too bad he doesn't know cars or I would have him check these out for me. The 98' is near Houston, so I would have to rethink my strategy if I were interested in that one.
Thanks for the replies. Your opinions matter a lot when I can't just run out and test drive/inspect each of these.

fixed a few things...

I have an 03 with 63k on it. It was my moms, and I got it after she had passed away. It had a cracked windshield from a rock, and a dent in the lower tailgate. I fixed these both, and put new tires on it. It is now what I would consider excellent condition.

I have too many projects, and too much stuff just sitting and I hate for this 100 to be like that.

Do I continue to hold on to it or do I let it go? What kind of price point should I put on it?

I don't think you're right about that. def search, you'll find a few folks that blew them in mundane conditions, and you might not find any that blew them offroad much less hardcore offroad.

madcardisease, I'm so sorry to read that your mom past away. Although we have never crossed paths, it is always tough to read about anyone losing a loved one.

On another note, I would be interested in what you decide.

Here's what he sent when I asked him to meet up
For
Test drive:

Dear Kirill,

I'm sorry but there's nothing I would love more then to arrange a local pick up but I'm away in a business trip .I'm very busy and I really don`t have time to meet my potential buyers, that is why I left the vehicle in eBay's custody which will ship it to the next owner at no additional cost . I will make this deal only through eBay's Vehicle Purchase Protection Program.

The shipping will start as soon as eBay receives your payment. Once the vehicle is in your possession, you will have 14 days to decide whether you keep it or not, it's your choice. If, by any chance, you'll find any kind of problems with it or it's not as described, eBay will pick up the vehicle from your address and wire the money back into your bank account .
To proceed with this transaction please send me your contact info for eBay : full name, full delivery address, eBay username and a phone number .I will contact eBay as soon as you send me these details .

Sincerely,
Tony Schmidt

Lots of scammers out there be aware!!!!

Why is this a fake ad? Seems ligit.

Why is this a fake ad? Seems ligit.

Because everything in the reply is standard for "scams". If you ever get a reply like this, you can absolutely, 100% be sure it is a scam. Ebay does not have a protection program for these kinds of purchases on classifieds, just go to ebay and read the scam alert/info. No one sells their vehicle and promises to ship it anywhere in the world at no additional cost while agreeing to accept a return of the vehicle for any reason.
If this purchase were pursued, they would probably use Western Union to have you wire the money, or send you some official looking email or phishing website from "ebay" with a way to send the money, and then you get... nothing.

Good to know. I just read ebay vehicle protection policy and even still, I wouldn't be comfortable buying a car without a personal inspection and test drive..
