I am thinking of using these hatches:
Cabela's: Custom Hatch
and installing one of these SS latches:
Cabela's: Southco Flush Latches
all installed inside of an aluminum base.

W/ Hatch Mod. does the door support 2 people seated?

It has held up fine since the second brace on the left side wasn't cut. If you are worried about it I would get the smaller hatch so you could open both sides and still keep the supports. I still kneel on the left side of the tailgate no problems but I do avoid kneeling on the right side.
