I broke the mount off my front axle housing that mounts the lower contol arm. Honestly nothing hard or technical on the trail. The mount split in half and the rear half also broke off the axle housing. Lucky the the lower control arm was still attached be the front bolt and front half of the bracket. It is at the welding shop now. We will see.

Is this a common failure for the 80? Has anyone used any reinforcement brackets for that area? Any pictures or recommendations?

Not uncommon, this one had been repaired in the past.

We welded reinforcements inside, front and rear, on both sides. For rigs that are going to be wheeled, this is a good idea, anytime the axle is out.

Made plates and built in the caster correction.

Have seen plenty of cracks around brackets that were not broken, inspect and weld, gusset as needed.

Radius arms in general fatigue the brackets. If you get any kind of articulation out of the front axle, you're twisting it like a dishrag.

Thanks guys. It is in shop in Moab right now to be welded back up. I am hoping they do it rigt.and get straight with good welds. They said they do a few A DAY but I am sure they mean jeeps. Hopefully it is all about the same.

I have all ready called and gotten some info about reinforcements from Vally hybrid, castor plates for a 2.5 lift and some oem bushings. I am hoping this shop will make it good enough to wheel some and get home. Then I will talk with my welder about reinforcing it all and installing castor plates.

Elegant solution.

Get rid of the radius arms and build or have a 3-link built to stop twisting your brackets and axle tube.

I just got rid of one of them, solved the problem. In most cases we narrow the arms, makes it flex easier and greatly reduces the stress on the brackets.

if the welds dont hold up let me know. i have a few empty fronts sitting around and could get them to atl for you.

What do you mean just got rid of one of them?

Are you having Rorry work on the truck?
I am not sure if this was directed to me or not. But I had the mount welded at a local shop in Moab. I am not sure who the welder was.

I was able to catch back up with my group on the Kokopelli trail. The welds held up well enough to make it down Rose Garden Hill. But I do have some strange slight vibes at times. I think i might have ripped up some of the polly bushings in the front. So I am currently looking for a set of lower control arms that i can install some OEM bushings in.

The shop is right on main street just south of town with a orange sign. Something generic like Moab motorsports or 4x4.
Im out in moab right now and a local guy named Rorry welded up a rusty rear axle from NY in a couple of places that broke out on the trail and i wouldnt be concernerned with his repairs. Vant remember the name of his shop infortunstely.

i had those guys fix a broken exhaust for me when i was out there... is it the 4x4 outpost?
I think that shop is "closed" but it looks like the shop i used is the same location under a new name. I have no idea if it is the same people but they acted like they have all been around a long time.
