Hi mudders,
It arrived at our farm a week ago and i am yet to work on it or see it again since I bought it. I paid $3500 (i would be interested to know if you think this was a fair price). It runs and drives and came with a few goodies

Here it is:
1978+ fj55 (seller said 77 but it can't be)
Duel fuel 2f
Duel Battery set up
Old ARB Bull Bar
Sliders
Rear Bar
Bucket seats
Roof Console
Uhf radio thing (haven't inspected it yet)
Non-working Ramsey winch
Paint job 2 years old (It looks pretty bad up close, paint drips)
Fibre glass front fenders

Came with:

-Trunk full of spare parts

So far I haven't seen any rust in the body (not that there won't be!). Let me know what you think.

I am trying to find out as much as i can about it. I read on here that the vin should be on the door hinge and frame rail. Is this true? This will tell me year.
I also read that you can't find original colour combinations based on the vin. True?
Thanks,
Brenno

VIN should be stamped on the outside of the front frame horn (US passenger side/Oz driver side), also on the tag riveted to the front door fame (B pillar)...driver side in the US. Paint code is not included in the VIN on earlier 55s, don't know when they started to include that.

Hey mate,

Where you got it from will form part of the cruisers history - if it was near the beach, you could almost guarantee it was used for launching/towing boats.

Do I see a cage/mesh in the back? Is the 55 still registered? LPG tank still current?

What you spent will become insignificant to what you will (probably) spend.

Thanks with the quick responses from everyone!
It is a 78/12 fj55

A tag in the engine bay for the gas system is dated 1994. So far I haven't run it on gas. Personally I find the tank in the trunk a huge pain. I love the fold down rear seat- it will be great for camping in the future.

The mesh in the back is a cargo barrier that my brother and I ended up taking out today. We also took off one of the interior panels in the trunk. There was a garden hose fitting mounted into it.

I also found a little rust on the sill of the left trunk glass.

Photos to come tonight,
Brenno

Update:

Changed coolant for the first time- from the looks PO must have changed it just before I bought it.

I bought some automotive carpet from Bunnings (hardware store in aus) and replaced the rubber mats as it had a few holes.

I took out the roof shelf and the Pearce-Simpson Super-Tomcat Mk2 radio. I have no idea whether to keep these or not.

And I have started making brackets for some 04 79 series buckets to go in.IMG_0007.webp

The bars in between the bench seat brackets were for the previous buckets. I plan on using them for the new seats.

Personally, I'd bin it - it's an old AM/SSB. Not a lot of people use the AM radios anymore, everyone has UHF.

Having said that, I'm going to mount an AM under my seat (in the BJ42) and only turn it on when we go shooting as some of the other vehicles only have AM radios.
