Have the BP51s with a J spring setup and 35s. I wont be doing any hardcore wheeling but I wanted what I thought was the best. I had the regular OME shocks on previous rigs. It think it is much improved. I did adjust both rebound and dampening to a much firmer setting. I thought they were too soft for DD at the soft setting it came set at. I want to get larger sway bars next.

Overall impressions of it? Js all around?
Have you been off road even just fire roads with them? Looking for any reviews and comparison I can find

Ive been offroad mostly sand and some steep dips and climbs. I love the ride off and on road. I don't see anyone taking the setup beyond its limitations. Im not a hardcore wheeler either. I just want to be able to get where Im going.

I am an OME dealer and I won't install or experiment with anything else. Ive never had an unhappy customer. This isn't my thread so please don't ask for a quote. The thread starters prices are very fair.

Sure they might be pretty good, but you can't compare a 2" bypass with a 2.5" bypass. Not to mention King's have the track record and materials too back up what I said. And King will do whatever length you want and add compression and rebound.
The bp51 is a 2.5” bypass, right? Piston might be in the 2.0 realm though, but shock body is 2.5~ i thought.

No internal bypass(1,2 or 3 adjusters) is going to compare with an external bypass shock of the same body diameter. However, as packaging goes, internal bypass for a weekend ride is vastly superior over a singular valved shock. Look at ford raptors, they are not even all that special, but they do great in spirited short bursts and such. Still no trophy truck, no matter what their owners think.

I don't know, maybe the price has changed since I bought mine. I paid $750 for the fronts and $650 for the rears. Custom length and w/compression adjusters.

Are the Kings in your picture bypasses? I'm used to seeing the external tubes on them... I see the adjustment knobs, but that alone (I'm sure you know) doesn't make them a bypass.

The BP-51 shocks are a 51mm (2") shock. The body diameter is larger, but only to house the bypass workings as far as I can tell. The effective diameter is still 51mm.

That King’s Chit is cats’s meow. I was fortunate enough to be talked into a set of Kong’s 2.5s but too stupid to get the one with adjusters.....didn’t know they had additional features that comes with the adjusters. That being said I still love my set it and forget it version and OMG they are good even though I have not come close to pushing them. Down side is where I live I don’t have enough chit to run over.:(

Also for the people thinking about getting the kings and think they are spendy, but mine cost almost twice as much as a set if you have just bought a set out right today, why? I have gone through 3 sets of shocks that I’m not happy with before for the king’s so the tuition cost of getting to kings for me was quite high so you could save a log of money by just got straight to kings! Or be happy with a set of OEM or 100 dollar whatever shocks, just slow down in the dirt.

As far as OME bp51 goes I’m sure they are very good but I can’t justify the price for what it is. Like @scottryana has already pointed out it’s comparing apple to oranges. Another down side of too many adjustments is people go nuts on the adjustments without fully understand and know how to adjust compression and rebound on a shock. Rebound range must be pretty narrow so why bother and if the rebound range is big enough you can get yourself in a Heep of trouble at higher speed(packing), quite dangerous.

For those who still think they want wide compression and rebound adjustability please state the principle of adjusting those 2 settings, what are the goals when adjusting and how to go about achieving those goals. In case it’s not obvious the principle and goal of compression and rebound adjustments are completely opposite.

how long does the bp51 last as far as mileage? Are they rebuildable and where can I buy the kit if it is?

Rebuildable. My buddy has 40k miles on a set so far with zero issues. Been a great shock
Where do I buy the rebuild kit? I tried Google search and it's just promotions and testimonials.... please let me know

Cruiser Outfitters @cruiseroutfit should be able to get you rebuild kits without issue.

I have had my BP-51's on my 80 for a few months but haven't driven much due to the rona. So far I'm not feeling like they were worth it. I came from nitrochargers and the BP-51's feel mostly the same. I have played with the adjusters a decent amount, I currently have compression on 2 and rebound on 5. This is where I have found the ideal "comfort" to be. It's kinda spongy and a little bouncy, but it soaks up the bumps on the trail pretty well. But again, it's just barely any better than the nitrochargers I had.

The adjusters suck. They are such a pain to use. You have to use both spanner wrenches in order to keep the shock body from spinning, and you have to completely lay under the cruiser to get to the rear shocks. I had thought that I'd be adjusting them for road and offroad use, but given how hard they are to mess with, I am just going to find the sweet spot and leave them there. I will say that the adjuster absolutely work and the range of adjustment is huge. So that's nice, I guess.

As far as setting rebound, I am just looking for comfort so I want it as soft as possible without it being overly bouncy.

I still need to do a lot more offroading with them, I haven't done any "fast" offroad driving with them so maybe they will shine there. But so far I am just wishing I put the money towards some icon's or kings.

Wow at ~$500/shock for these is going to be tempting in the immediate future. I've been on the fence with a Slinky suspension, but I have zero experience with them and when doing the math, >$800 per shock for a 2.5 remote resi with compression adjust is nuts. Twin tube bypass 2.5" Kings come in less if I remember correctly.

My friend absolutely thrashes (jumped it at least 50 times and on his 4th set of tires in 45k miles) his 5th gen 4runner with BP51s and it always surprises me how well they do everything when tuned correctly.

Are there any measurements available on these yet? Identical to the L shocks?
lol, hey that is me... looking at my second set for the 80... so hard to beat the price point for what you get

Any updates on the shocks. I’m in the same boat. Nitro chargers with OMe springs. Was hopping this would help smith ride.

go beat on them and learn how to tune them, they are great. They take big hits really well.
I have jumped them probably 100 times and put 60k one them.
if you are bouncy turn the rebound up.

Just finished up a few days in Canyonlands and they performed excellent. Much better than nitro chargers. Soaked up all of the high speed bumps and washes and did so in comfort in my 80. Nitros are abusive to one’s body and BP51 are a real step up. Im glad I installed them.

Mine are set at 6 and 6 all around.

How loaded down are you? I'm at 6 on rebound all around, 2 on compression up front and 3 rear.
Stock other than ARB front bumper, rear arb drawers and sliders. OME Heavies up front, med rear. still feels a bit "bouncy" but also need some more weight in the rig as thats what i was planning with the spring selection.

@Wompom
It is my daily driver (pretty much) so sees the majority of its time not loaded. That being said, Canyonlands were loaded up pretty heavy; fridge full for 5 days in the Bush, 21 gallons of water, Outback drawers full of kitchen items and tools/spare parts, roof rack with Eezi-Awn RTT, front ARB with 12k winch, sliders, 4x4 Labs rear, main and Factory sub tanks full, 2 people and enough gear and related for 2 people in the Bush for 4-5 days. It was nice and surprisingly smooth coming from N73/74L nitro chargers for umpteen years. Man they beat the hell out of you.

On the highway unloaded it can feel pretty swimmy, like a 70’s El Dorado but it isn’t excessive. I’d rather have a little swimmy than too harsh. Hope this helps.

what springs are you running? heavies all around or are you on Js and the longer BPs?
I'm heavies up front and meds in the rear, regular length bp51s. Thinking of upping rear rebound a bit still.

@Wompom

I’m on 850J up front and 863J rear with the longer version of the BP51 shocks. I’m happy with the springs and shocks. They seem to go really well together.

Just joined the bp-51 club! On 850J/863 springs. So much nicer than the tired nitro chargers that were on.
