On the right rear quarter panel i had to drill out the spot-welds and cut out alot of steel. This was because the rear most part of the body, under the taillights was like swiss cheese.

this is the hj60 parts truck. i did the same cut on the bj60 and transfered the steel over.

Body still has alot left, but i started to do the suspension swap. the hj60 has arb lockers ff/rr and is re geared for larger tires. Not sure what ratio, but my uncle drove on the highway with 35's.

with my dads help we were able to get it done in one day.

we did get the 2h-t running before the suspension swap. and ill be parting out the HJ60.

The chop looks good. I like it.

pretty good. Shame you had to kill the HJ, the body looked decent.

the hj60 wheel wells werent as bad as the bj 60 but it has rust in more areas.
I know roof has lots, a pillars, driver floor was completly gone and door jams were also rusty. The bj60 was really only rusty on the wheel wells and rockers which I had replacement panels for! There were a couple small spots higher on the body that were pretty small.
I’m gonan try to save as much as possible from the hj60 though!

Started doing more body work in the typical rust areas and hooking the engine back up so i can drive it in and out of the shop

Next I modified the trans crossmember because the driveshaft was hitting it due to the soa. The pic it at full droop on the lift.

I wasn't going to remove the windshield or headliner because I didn't see any rust around the windshield. Unfortunately I found rust under one point on the stock.

a 90 degree pick was the best tool i found to use for this. especially because i will try to reuse the headliner. it came offwith no problems.

the pick worked well on the headliner clips all around the truck.

I bet you’re glad you didn’t skip the window and headliner. What a bummer that would have been to do all that work, paint it, fix the mechanicals, and have it leak on the first trail ride.

You’re inspiring me to do this work myself. I’ve got some rust starting. Not nearly what you’ve dealt with here, but for someone who hasn’t learned to weld yet it seems daunting. Seeing this makes me believe I can handle it.

This is awesome work - glad you started a thread for it! Crazy cool transformation going on here and I look forward to seeing this thing on the roads around here. Any plans to turbo the 3B when all the body work is finished?

I've recently got back at my BJ60 project that has been sitting in pieces for too long and it's work like this that inspired me to just go and get it done. I would be interested in a couple pieces off the HJ60 though if you're at the part out phase though. Still need that inner wheel well and if you have a good rear crossmember I'd take that too ;)

LOL kinda glad, its good but its more work haha. My original plan was to fix it quickly and drive it, but it snowballed fast. since I was already in, I just kept cutting more and more rust out.

you should! Mig welding its pretty easy to learn! and that all I have been using. For the metal work I pretty much only used a grinder and a welder. I dont have any specialty body work tools.

thanks! are you in the city? or out of town? Original plans were to drive the 3b for a while then possibly swap to a 1hz and turbo it. the 1hz will bolt into the 80 frame I want to swap this onto since my frame isn't the best. But I recently found another diesel motor. haven't picked it up yet though. I'll post about it soon ish. Do you mean the rear crosssmember for the shocks?

im basically building the same truck my dad wheeld when when I was a child. He drove this bj60 to the usa woith all of us, wheeled, and drove back. he has a trialer now lol. Pretty sure he wheeled this bj60 alongside the HJ60 from my uncle.

That's a sweet picture! Family trips with some (light) wheeling is my idea of a perfect trip and something I hope I can take my boy on when he's old enough to appreciate it. The mystery diesel is it still a Toyota? Other than the 3B I don't have any experience with Toyota diesels but, I have heard the 1HZ with a turbo is a good combo.

I'm just outside the city in the town of Birds Hill but I've lived in WPG my most of life. I'd be looking for the rear most crossmember part my rear shock tube is in shockingly (ha) in good shape. The one on my 85 frame looks a little different than the picture below but, I don't think it matters too much which version I end up going with.

the hj60 rear crossmember is rusty in the middle also, not as as bad as. the photo you posted. Im going to make a crossmember for the bj60 frame but it ownt look stock. right now its just the bumper bolted on. A couple vendors on mud make the rear crossmember.
Removing the rivets for the rear crossmember in not fun, especially if you have the body on the frame still.
the new motor is still toyota
