Isn't HEI a chevy thing? Or do you just mean high energy ignition (full electronic).

With 78 electronic ignition, this is how it will plug in:

1. You'll have a BY coming from your ignition switch (switched 12V). It will go to the BY on the igniter and the positive on the coil (there should be another BY come off the "+" of the coil to your starter motor, but it may be solid black as well.

2. Solid black from your Igniter will go to "-" on your coil.

3. R and W like thecrazygreek said, go to your distributor, should be a dongle/plug there.

4. The WB from your igniter is ground.

5. the BY coming off the ignitor goes to switched 12V (#1).

The BY wires make it confusing, but essentially you have BY between the starter and "+" on the COIL, and then from the "+" on the COIL it splits and goes between the ignition (BY should come out of the harness from the ignition switch) and then over to the igniter.

When I was going through this, I recall some frustration, but essentially you have signal wires (from dizzy to ignitor), ground wires, and 12V constant and 12V switched.

i got to a point where i was able to start and get the cruiser running in the "START" position on my ignition, but as soon as i let go in the "RUN" position, it would die - which meant I was cutting the switched 12V to the system.

FROM the starter to the "+" ignition coil is 12V constant power. From there the BY wire travels to your IG on your ignition switch (acting like an on/off switch on your house). From there it travels back to your igniter (switched 12V, meaning - it will only get 12V when you turn your key to start/run).

Ok.....I think that gives me a much better read out of what I need to do. Thanks big D. Im sure I will be calling to make sure it looks correct before I turn the key over : ) I will also take pictures and update what it looks like.

Thanks!!!!

I think I have the wires all set up to atleast get me a good idea of how its going to run.....thanks to a couple long phone calls to Dallas we should be good to go. I was able to get the fuel lines bent up and into place. I just need to get a new compression fitting to finish the job then I should be ready to crank it over. Pictures to follow.

Fuel lines bent and installed.....woooo hoooo

Just need to finish some small things and put a strong battery in and I think I should be ready to kick it over.

Help !!!!!!!! Does anybody have a stock 77 wiring diagram???????

I could only find it for a V8 swap....not factory wiring.

I have here from FSM 98154: Land Cruiser (FJ40 series) wiring diagram (or USA & Canada) - 1975 model

This is a plain wiring diagram meaning no mention of desmog stuff et cetera.

Let me know, (PM send)

It very well could work......Dallas and I are trying to figure out why im not getting ANY juice other then to the starter motor. Not sure whats missing. Im sure your electric knowledge will help Rudi.

Thanks

Fusible link(s) ?
The starter is the only one without a fuse so I would start at the Fusible Link(s).

You have mail.

Thanks Rudi for the diagram. I will compair notes with Dallas and see what we can come up with. Thanks for the help again.

WOOOO HOOOOO Good news, I just got juice to run up to the fuse box and got it to turn over. Getting so close it hurts!!!!! Just need to go and drop the rest of the fluids in and dump some fuel in and see if we cant get it to fire.

T, the Haynes manual has a good wiring diagram for a '77. Don't you have one?

I do, but mine is not 77 specific....it is for 75-78 if I remember correctly. I can look when I get home just to make sure. But I found the problem that I was looking for. I just compared the wiring to my 76 and was able to find the problem. ( I hate fusible link) : )

'77 is right in the middle of that year range ;)

LOL Thanks.

So after having some time to fill the motor with oil and putting a few gallons of water in the cooling
system I started to crank it over and see if I could get some fire out of her. I soon found out the I had
the lines switched at the carb. I had the send going into the return and the return going into the send.
So I re-bent the fuel lines and now have fuel sitting in the window of the carb so I know that I am
getting fuel. I then did the old screwdriver trick on a bolt and also found that I have no spark.....so
back to the drawing board on the ignitor and coil wiring to see whats going on.

Quick question........this is a picture of the vacum lines on the carb that run to the distributor.....which side goes to wich on the distributor? Which side is advance and wich side is retard? Thanks for the help.

I was able to get her up and running.....again after spending hours on the phone with Dallas and him correcting my mistakes we got it up and running. Now just for some fine tunning and getting the engine compartment cleaned up of all the wiring and vacum hoses. Almost drivable.
