i went to walmart tonight and saw this in the parking lot and just had to park next to it. it was sooo clean, probably an old lady, it had a flower print pad on the drivers seat... it looked freshly detailed too..

Great build! Solid dedication!

thanks, its only going to get bigger and crazier.. stay tuned..
You are killing it- great job! This bumper build of yours is going to be my inspiration for trying to build a bumper for my '95 4R before I attempt one for the wife's rig.

Would you be willing to share the rear bumper details? I want the same style and look, but I'm not a great fabricator. I love how simple and effective your design looks and it looks plenty strong.

what kind of details are you looking for? ill do my best to explain. i couldnt find find a bumper that i really liked in the aftermarket, 4x4 labs was the closest match, but still not exactly what wanted. so i bought the hinge/spindle, latch, spring loaded pin thing, hitch receiver, and a small pile of steel from a local metal supermarket and started building. i let the truck dictate the angles and the height. i wanted ultra simple and very tight to the body so thats what i built.

Measurements and cuts? Like I said, I'm a terrible fabricator, but I can follow a pattern if I have one. Haha! Anything helps in my quest for a clean looking rear bumper.

oh i have no idea what the measurements are, i didnt really "measure" anything.. the main rear 2x4 i eyeballed the width and added a couple extra inches on each side of the truck, then i tack welded to the mounts i made. i eyeballed the 2x2 forward bars and tacked one on and cut and moved and modified it until i liked it, then made a second one to match for the other side. once i had them where i wanted them i heavily tacked them in place. i cut the 2x4 to match the width of the 2x2. you can measure all you want, but sometimes you just have to start cutting/welding and make stuff. i suggest you look carefully at all the bumper pics, specifically where i cut the frame and the mounts i made. just start fabricating out of heavy poster board(walmart) buy a couple sheets and pretend its metal, cut big and trim down a little at a time, then transfer your new template to steel and boom, your fabricating. dont be afraid to make something that sucks, just learn from that and the next thing you build will be that much better. start by making some thing small and simple.. ill get some actual measurements for you tomorrow to get you in the neighborhood.

I appreciate it. I'll look over the pictures you've posted and see what I can do. It'll be my first self-made bumper, so it'll probably be terrible. But I can't justify paying $2k for something I don't like or won't utilize to the fullest. Did that with my 5th gen 4Runner.

Love this build, some of the best quality work I've seen.

My only offering is that the rear bumper, being so tight with the body, you may need to stiffen the vertical spare mount. Deflections while offroading or even on a wavy paved highway may cause interference. Just keep an eye out I guess!

Yeah gusset that tire carrier more to stiffen it up. With a heavy 37 up that high it’s gonna be wobbling at least a little especially off-road.

How do those wheels work for you? They are the same specs (4.5 backspace +15mm offset) as the fj cruiser steelies I had and mine were rubbing the front radius arms at full lock.

You beat me to it.... gussets on either side of the main pedestal angled rear bottom to forward facing edge of pedestal at the top of the gusset maybe 8” high.

thanks for all the input guys. i do plan on beefing up the carrier, i havent had much time to work on it the last week or so. i may cut off the top, above the 45* 1x1, and redesign from there up, im not totally happy with it as it is right now.

im working on making the 37s fit in the rear. i only have 10-12 miles on the tires, they clear everything 100% just normal driving/turning BUT any flex would put the rear tires into the sway bar end link mounts. i guess the 95 has outside the frame mounts, and all other years are under the frame, im not sure if thats a fact but i think i read that somewhere recently... i have 1.5" wheel spacers being droned in from jeff bezos, that should help a lot. right now i have the right side flares off to trim the body and i cut out a rusty spot. blah blah blah haha

oh also i stuffed a 2 inch spring spacer in the rear and installed new shocks. as you can imagine ill lift it properly soon.
