Gentlemen, I think we have a winner :steer: I'm going to put the spare tire hardware back on the vehicle unless someone wants me to check out something specific with this mock up.

That is fantastic! It looks like it will even work with the tank support I made with my custom bumper hitch support.

Great job all round there.

To clarify this is a 97 Montero LS tank?

I'll mostly be towing the M101 CDN and definitely plan to add a tank to it, so that gets me part way there for total fuel. I still want the extra range of some additional tankage, so something's going under the cargo area eventually. Soooo.

For a short while, I was contemplating installing the Trooper tank underneath the Kamparoo trailer. If you can swing it, see if you can stuff either a Ford van or a Trooper (both are rectangular) fuel tank on or under your M101 trailer. Using the in-tank pump, you can basically transfer fuel into your tow vehicle with the flip of a switch while you're having lunch on the trail!

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to accommodate the spare tire, two water tanks AND the fuel tank under the Kamparoo so the fuel tank lost out.

Just a thought.

Yup, Monty LS tank.

Coming up with a mount on the front and rear for this tank will be a snap. Using straps would be a little more challenging I think. It's great that this tank is made to be mounted on the flange.

Could someone post up some pics on the tank mounting solution from MAF please? I'd like to see what/where/how they're doing this. I think their tanks are mounted on the chassis rails, but not sure.

Only issue is finding one now, cant get them on Rockauto and no wreckers in the PNW list them on the parts finding sites. We never got Mitsu's up here so they are non existent.

Got some info form my buddy with the Monty:

Fuel sender values- Low/Empty, 3 ohms + / - 2 ohms.
Full, 110 ohms + / - 7 ohms-

'92-95 show ground circuit switch at sender for empty/ reserve light

------------------------

Below are some pics of the '97 with a 2.5" lift and 285 tires. The spare tire is approx 13" from the tire to the ground (measured at rear of vehicle), 10.5" from tire to ground (measured toward the front of the vehicle). The spare tire holder has been raised by the washer stacking method, approx 1.5" or so."

So tell me this Ash, when you said to me 'I don't own a 40 because I like a car I can just get in and drive witout having to fabricate stuff', did you mean your Mercedes, or were you talking about the 80? You see, to me, this is 'fabricating'.

So my question to you is this: when are you going to use your skills for good instead of evil and get a 40? Better yet, when are you going to use your skills on MY 40? I need to get rid of my gas tank and replace it with a long range petrol tank (too damned hard and expensive to get LPG here)- go find one and we'll do it next week:D

Ahh, Grasshopper - "having" to fabricate so that I can drive a 40 vs "wanting" to fabricate in the 80 because I'm simply bored is a concept I'm trying to impart upon you. :flipoff2:

Remember to wax up, wax down.......

I pickd up a tank out of a 97 4runner this evening, maybe Ill get some pics of where it will sit this coming weekend.

Although the fuel capacity is less in the 4runner tank, I have an air tank for my on board air where the rear spare was, and Id like to keep it in that space or close to where it was, which is why Im going to go that route.

Also, the 4runner tank is mounted on one side by the flange of the tank, and on the opposite side by a strap FYI

Try Car-Part.com, I found several in Oregon and Washington.

Thank you very much!

So was this tank out of a 3.0L or a 3.5L? You said LE so I assume a 3.0L.

My factory fuel filler tube just rusted through on my last fill up so seems like a good time to get this project rolling.

Ali,
Great find on the Montero tank. That's a pretty slick mounting position, very well protected, along with otherwise fitting like a glove.

Me likey. 2 different people, but same same!

Well CRAP, it appears as though this tank won't work for the '96 due to the rear bumper I made many moons ago. The tank is too deep (front to back) to fit in the space that's available. Bummer, guess I'll go check out the Cherokee or the Trooper tank.

At least Ralph Nader won't have a problem with your rig being rear ended...

Sheesh man, that's A BUMPER.

Ah damn that sucks.......looks like I made my hitch support about the same as yours. The two bolts on the back of the frame, does the tank go back that far? Sorry just trying to see if it will fit mine. My hitch support is about even with the rear most of the two bolts. I could cut mine off and move it if needed but I just got he bumper done 3 week ago. :crybaby:

LOL, I'm relying on the other car's crumple zone in the event of a rear ender :D

For a very brief moment, I thought about modifying my bumper but it'd be too much work and may jeopardize the integrity. The hitch receiver cross member was built to withstand tremendous extraction forces (stuck in a mud hole) using a kinetic strap. I have no other recovery loops on the bumper, like most folks; hence, the receiver support was overbuilt! Philosophically, I like the idea of a centralized pulling location so in the event of a sideways pull, which is often the case, the vector forces will be distributed evenly onto both chassis rails. Well, at least it looked good mathematically!! But, I digress.....

Forgive me but I'm not sure what two bolts you're referring to. Snap a pic and then post up so that I can visualize this better.

I'm just annoyed with this mild dilemma as I REALLY love this tank :crybaby:

I got rear-ended in my FJ55 by a fellow who destroyed some lousy AMC product by smacking into me at a stoplight at 35mph. Did about $500 worth of damage to the LandCruiser's bumper, bent the bench seat mounts, and trashed my neck. Didn't bother the gas tank or rear x-member at all. The FJ55 tank was in basically the same position as the tank Ali was trying to fit into.

Just completed the install of a complete OEM system a year ago. Not sure if I followed this thread completely but wanted to correct one point. The OEM 13 gallon tank fit just fine with my 4x4 lab rear bumper, though the dual filler neck was harder to plumb in with the bumper's side wings

It took me several ebay auctions to get all the pieces and parts. I ended up with an extra OEM fuel transfer ECU. I plugged it into my functioning system and it seems to be fully functional. In addition to allowing you to use the OEM wiring harness already installed in your 80. The factory ECU has some features, such as an auto shut off to prevent the main tank from overfilling.

Cannot say if all it's features could be made to work in a hybrid system. If anybody would like to try and make it work for your sub tank system, PM me and we can try and figure out what its worth.
