i personally like a combination of years into one outstanding machine. or maybe i didn't have much choice and got screwed on a cruizer. in all seriousness, i agree with landpimp-the later the model the more desirable.
disk brakes came in 12/75....some 11/75's even had them.
The power steering is not the strongest stock, and most people go with astro/scout/saginaw of somekind anyway.
The main years I look for are 12/75 to 78. 78 is just nice becuase it was the first year of full electronic ignition, but with the older style body. But, it is very easy to adapt electronic ignition into a 76/77.
I have a 12/76 with 1986 electronic ignition. So it fits the bill.
correct for US. But as more and more non US 40's come into the US, from South America and other markets.......those will prolly still have front drum brakes, even up into the 1980's, just something to be aware of of you find say a 80 fj40 with drums.

i have a 1972 and I love it! The thicker metal has caused a tad bit more rust but I really dont need the power steering and all the newer stuff the 80's trucks had. It's plain simple and I am in love with it!
I own a 1970 and while I love it, if I were looking for a DD that vintage would not be my go to. Almost everyone says the 4 speed is much nicer to drive than the 3 speed. Also while the novelty factor is cool, there is a reason they got away from 3 on the tree. Same for the bench seat.
