Best tent heater?

Reading this thread reminded me that my neighbor gave me a Mr Heater when he was cleaning out his garage. I had no idea it would be so useful for camping till I saw this thread. Anyway, I pulled it out and dusted it off. It looks brand new, but I can't get the pilot lit for the life of me. It has a brand new cylinder, and the ignitor sparks, but no flame. Is it my altitude (6500 feet)? Any tips/suggestions?

Wyatt,
What process are you going through when trying to light it? When you turn the gas to the on/light position you have to push down on the gas switch while pushing the ignitor switch. When I put a new propane bottle on the heater, I turn the gas to light and then press down on it for about 10 or 15 seconds before hitting the ignitor. I continue to press on the gas switch until the pilot starts to ignite. You have to keep the gas button pushed for several seconds after the pilot lights so it stays lite. After the pilot stays lite when you ease off the gas switch you turn the gas switch to low or high and the main face should ignite.

Yeah, I'm trying to light it the same way. I'm not getting any gas flow whatsoever. So either its not letting gas through because it can't detect enough oxygen, or the regulator or switch is messed up. I cleaned out the gas port and the little 02 sensor dealio; still no dice.

Hi Wyatt, I bought a Mr Heater last Thurs, It works great, But we tried to start it in the morning and it wouldnt, I had to open a window a few inches to let in some good oxygen, It fired right up.
I dont remember what elevation you are at, But it says somewhere on the heater that over 7K feet it has a hard time working.
Good luck

FYI, I never even try the piezo igniter with my Buddy Heater. I just use a lighter.

Lighter, match, anything....no workie. :(

No, as stated earlier, I have no flow that I can tell. No sound, no smell, no flame even when I hold a lit match to it.

Ok, I finally got mine to light! Yesterday I think somehow it found enough oxygen in my house to turn on the propane. However, it would not stay lit. And after a while it wouldn't light anymore since it was getting no more gas flow. Somehow I guess the oxygen sensor is not letting the gas flow.

SO, is there any way to disable the oxygen sensor and still have gas flow? F safety.

there is a company that make a simular heater. Same concept as the ZODI. Ive used this and its great.

I bought a Big Buddy 2 years ago. Have to say hands down the best purchase I have made in a while. I take that thing everywhere. For car camping it's really hard to beat it. I usually have it hooked up to a 2 gallon propane tank. It will run for several days on hi with that. I use it to heat my 2 car garage with no problems, use it for wrenching outside in the cold, tailgating, on the deck at night, emergancy room heater for when the power goes out, also helps getting a 40 nice and warm a lot quicker. My fan will usually run for 24 hrs before it goes dead.

Never had a single issue. Been on some really rough trails with it in the back of the 40 with no issues. Now when going out to an event my friends ask if I'm going to bring the heater.

This is great to hear. It sounds like these are the way to go...can't wait to try mine out on the next camping trip. This has turned out to be a really informative thread.

I'll try and see if there is something useful in my parts explosion for you.

Thanks alot! I will have to tear mine down and check it out. Will report back.

Really I don't see a tent heater keeping you warm at night given the heat loss through the tent walls unless you run it all night long - and that kind of defeats the peace and quiet I camp to get

I think you'd be better saving the outlay on the heater and heading over to western mountaining and picking up something like this with a good thick therm-a-rest -

Western Mountaineering

I got one for the :princess: who sleeps really COLD at nights, and I've have had no more kicks in the ribs at 4am letting me know she's "100% sure she's dying of hypothermia and I need to do something about it RIGHT NOW DAMMIT !"

Now I get kicked in the ribs at 4am letting me know "She's sweating and can't sleep and I need to do something about it RIGHT NOW DAMMIT!"
