Best tent heater?

I checked the specs on my deep cycle battery and the bunk warmer. The battery is a 95 amp hour and the bunk warmer uses 8 amps an hour. According to the website of the heater it only cycles on 50% of the time at most, so they said to figure 4 amps per hour. Given those figures the bunk warmer should work for about 24 hours straight. If you ran it for 8 hours a night (I don't think I have ever slept a full 8 hours camping) you should get three nights out of a charged battery. One of the drawbacks to the bunk warmer is it only warms up the sleeping bags and not the air in the tent. Not sure if this is a big deal but it might be for some people. Hope this helps :)

It does help. Thanks for following up with that, kennyfj40.

If money was not an issue I would put one of these mini-furnace heaters in my FJ60 and run a duct up to the RTT. They can run on gasoline of deisel.

I'll take quality down bags for 200, Alex.

I agree with Esh, the best way would be good sleeping bags.

Girlfriend and I went camping last month and it got down into the teens. She was shivering in her sleeping bag because she had no insulating pad under her bag. I had to give her mine and spoon to keep her warm. I ended up freezing instead that night.

I would like to see other options for propane heaters or electric blankets if people have any other options...

You HAD to give her yours!??! Randy Randy Randy. You should know better. Never let your girl get cold. You should have went to HER for warmth :grinpimp:

I was talking about our Bishop trip, not the trip we all did together (Death Valley.) I was too drunk to be cold the death valley trip...

I have always been a bit concerned about open flame in my tent also. When I was younger and camping with my family pop always used to just take the coleman lantern into the tent and that made it nice and toasty. Maybe this helps, although I would definately get one of those oxigen alarm thingies if this is your choice.

That would be a sweet set up but $1700.00 is a little steep. I thought I saw something similier to this on the forum once. I think it was made for the VW van/camper and ran off gas.

Well, it sounds like the Mr. Heater may not be an option. I appreciate the input.
I have owned 3 Mr. heaters and they work great. I have used mine at -5 degrees with no problem. I have used it in my new house when there was no power. We just cracked a window a bit to vent the CO.

I have also used a 120 VAC electric blanket. That was cool. It draws a max of 120 Watts AC so thats about 13 Amps DC.

I am a battery/inverter geek so I was not worried about battery discharge.

The Mr. Heater pictured in this post can be used indoors. We use them in our comm van on searches with very happy management searchers.

FYI - The Lowes by me in the Dallas area is closing out their heaters including both sizes of Mr. Heater at 50% off.

50%? I may swing by the local one here and see if they are going to do the same. We've still got some cold months ahead here in Colorado, though, so they may not be on sale just yet.

Thanks for the heads up. I may buy a Mr. Heater just for my garage projects if nothing else.

I think that could last you 2 nights. You also get some minimal utility from the Power Dome. I have successfully jumped 3 cars with it, and it was nicer to use the PD than running cables from my truck to their car.

It is best used as a power source, and you can recharge it during the day if you're on a long drive (comes with both 12v socket and AC wall charger cables). The air compressor won't last long and is really for blowing up a mattress.. very short duty cycle.

The trick to keeping the battery alive is following directions: charge for 48h before a trip or every 3-6 months.
