Can anyone point me to their favorite threads that detail the anatomy of Pig front fender repair?

I know I saw a great thread that discussed why Pig fenders rust where they do and what you can do to fix the problem before repairing the holes in the sheetmetal.

Can you all help me out as I plan on how to fix my front fenders?

PS: I am writing about my '74 Pig - driver's side is worse than passenger side.

Yeah, I couldn't find the color code on mine anywhere either. I'd be interested in the repair thread too.

Pablo,

I wonder if the Gumby's 1973 FJ55 Buildup thread would be of use to you?? Sorry I have to learn how to link one of these days-Dave

Fenders are pretty easy to fix. Ehsan and Rare Spares out of Australia make patches. I've heard that both fit well and I think both include the bottom curve.

I didn't need the bottom curve b/c of my sliders so I just used 16 ga sheet. I think k9 and I did the same thing on hers. Mine cam out nicely and I didn't even use any bondo.

For the sliders you most often need to cut out what is there and weld in replacements. IPOR makes nice, stock looking, replacements and also nice sliders that you weld in in place of the rusted out ones.

Check out page 9 of my build thread for how I fixed my fenders.

Thanks for pointing me towards your repairs...

Do you mind if I shamelessly link to your repair pics?

So a follow on to your post - I agree that it does look relatively easy to repair.

What I want to tap into from the Collective Pig Conscious Mind (CPCM?) is the WHY, or what causes the rust problem at the bottoms?

Is there anything I can incorporate in my repairs that will remove rust concerns for the future? Granted, CO is fairly dry state, but I want to pass this Pig on to my boy someday...

Jackpot!

Thanks for the pointer to Gumby's work.

Post #26 describes some of the causes of the rot:

#1 before blasting on the rs fender
#2 before blasting on the inside
#3 inside of the repair on the ls fender. I'm going to do something different with the brace where it comes down on the curve. The stock way leaves a pocket for gunk to fill up and rot out the fender. I think I may just double up the curve and leave the end of the channel open for drainage.

Mud gets trapped between the fender sheet metal (outer) and metal support rib (inner) creating rust. Some of my pics I think in my thread show all the dirt falling out.

And link away!

This really was an easy repair and I'm a  mechanic. If you need the curve buy the replacements from Ehsan or Rare Spares. Trace the replacement on the fender, cut the rust out, then weld the replacement in and I don't think you even have to worry about the inner support b/c the replacements are thick enough.

This is the sheetmetal Rare Spares carries.

Honestly I went through this all a while back but it's been a while since I messed with it. I ended up geting a set of mint fenders and not having to do the patches. I do know someone who has a set of NOS fenders. Maybe I can convince him to post some pictures of how they looked from the factory. If not I can snap a few pics of mine.
