don't get me wrong, because I like the small block chevy, but only a brit would think it was the most reliable ever. I understand why. Look what you have to compare it to.

With any engine or any mechanical device for that matter 'less is more' when it comes to reliability and ease of working on.

The SB was very easy to work on and IME ultra reliable.

Easiest should include frequency of work. Old motors were easier but needed to be dicked with at least once a month.

I swear at my junk just about every time I have to open the hood. Luckily I only need to do so a few times a year and they usually tell me what's wrong in advance.

The best kind of wrenching is less wrenching.

You must be getting old.. Or passive... Modern engines are great, until you try to troubleshoot them without big software/hardware...

And even if running decent software the diagnoses is not always right, ask me how I know!!

Years ago, if it did not start it was fuel, spark or air. Nowadays, it is because the yaw sensor has detected the coke can is not sitting correctly in the cup holder!!!:bang:

Best work is no work. Not opening the hood except for oil changes for the first 100K beats the dog piss out of doing a "tune up" every six months.

computer diagnostics beats the s*** out of guessing or needing 30 years of experience to know why the carb is doing that thing when its warm.

True, the first 100k is a good thing. Problem is the next 100k .

Not so much. I haven't had a 5.7 for the 2nd hundred, but the 1UZ and 2UZ are strong out to 300,000+. Even GMs modern V-8s are 300,000 mile engines, although they tend to have some issues along the way.

90% of the 1FZs problems under 300K is the owners not leaving them alone.

You ignorant heathen. Everyone knows the 1FZe needs a hg as a PM every 100k.

IMO, best is cheapest to own (up front costs, maintenance and repairs) and most reliable. Of the three I've owned, 2F, 3B and 3FE, the 3FE wins. They've all been easy to work on, but it's been minimal work.:)

22RE is wonderful for learning how to work on engines.

Dang, I need to get a 3fe...

With exception of toyota, the Subaru engine parts are all visible and with the flat engine design, easy to reach. I used to take the engine out in 45 min flat for clutch changes on the 4x4 models :) Worst engine IMHO I would say the ford Aerostar. Did a head gasket change and book says 12 hours.

The 3FE gets a nod for being both terrible and terrible to work on.

Hey! I like the 3FE :flipoff2: or maybe that's because I've put some $$$ into mine.

Now THAT'S some sig material there.

The 1HZ diesel wins hands down as far as 6 cyls go. It easy to work on ,but because its so maintenance free ,it usually goes from oil change to oil change without ever looking at it .
