I have to say after working on my 40 and 60 2f motors for years, my FZJ80 is a bitch to work on in comparison. Seems like there was so much room under the hood of those rigs that I could climb in and close the hood (and I'm a big guy!). Everything is so easy to find and get to. With the 80, I feel like I have to be a contortionist. Things are just so tight and hard to get to.

This doesn't mean that I don't love my 93!

Flathead six, single carb.

Used to run a 72 Camaro, it had been 'played' with. 350 SB, 4 bolt, Roller cam, Holley it was my DD for quite awhile.......turn the key and it went and never broke. Oil change once a year, the occasional set of plugs. Why did I get rid of it? The body leaked everywhere, UK weather needs cars that don't sink at the first sign of a shower. I no longer have youth on my side, if I did (and the Spanish authorities would allow it!), I would have a 350 SB in my 80 in a heart beat, an endless parts supply, no 'iffy' electronics, just drive! :steer:

Dave

The easiest engine to work on....is someone else's engine.

Since we're being pedantic, I'd say that the Stirling engine is perhaps the easiest to work on...

The easiest engine to work on is about the furthest from the best. In fact I would say those two things are pretty close to being diametrically opposed.

The best engine and most difficult - the 200 series 5.7L
The easiest to work on and least power and reliability - the 1F

ain't no such thing as a free lunch.

The 3FE gets a nod for being both terrible and terrible to work on.

Overall, a 22R might get my vote for best combination of reliability and ease of maintenance.

VW bug motor can be rebuilt in a couple of hours including pulling and re-installing it, but is far from the most reliable.

don't get me wrong, because I like the small block chevy, but only a brit would think it was the most reliable ever. I understand why. Look what you have to compare it to.

22re gets my vote. When I need to do my timing chain, I just pull the motor and reseal the entire thing. It can be done in a day.

The 200 I6 in my 66 Fairlane convertible and then the 383 in my grandmothers 64 Chrysler Saratoga 300. Miss going to the Mopar Nationals.

Cool drawing... VW ?
Ya, better ones out there (drawings), but the vw flat 4 in the older bug/ghia/bus/etc. Stupid simple IMO. Best? Ha, but sure run a long long long time with a little up keep.

Dammit the thread is aboot Cruiser enjins...
But a flat 4 whether in VW or porsche (poormans) is simple.
2F.
