Nissan Best/Easiest Engine to work on?

My 1985 MB diesel engine (OM617) is going strong with just shy of 250,00 miles. I don't know how easy it is to work on as I've done nothing except routine maintenance.

engine is easiest/best to work on? I have a 3FE that's working fine, but I always wonder what other engine I would throw in there if it died.
