Beginning the CRAZY FJ40 Rebuild

I got the pieces welded into the bottom of the first door. Not super happy with the result, but I realize I will have to smooth it out with fiber filler to make it look good. Always do with weld repair. I also have a couple of deep dents to pull out, but I will go to a buddy's shop to use a stud gun for that

On to the second door. Not as bad as the first, but still needing repair. Notice the PO drilled holes into the door for a hardware latch. I have the original latch, so I will weld that in after I finish and fit the doors. I cut out the rust, and got one piece welded in before quitting for the night. Welding looks really bad until you grind it off. Didn't get to the grinding tonight, but I got all the rust cut out and one piece in.

Fixing these doors really put a damper in my plans to get the body back together, but it had to be done. Sux

Color is range rover olive green. Look back at posts starting about #30-50

Got the welding all done on the second door.

Ground the welds down, used metal filler to smooth out, and shot some primer. They're pretty good--probably about as good as they came off the line, anyway. Still final work to do though.

Well-time to get my pile of parts ready to paint to put on the cruiser. I'm telling ya, I can't believe how many little parts there are that I have to sandblast, prime and paint. Seems every time I work on some parts, I find out there are more that need to be done.. Parts--Parts--Parts!!!

Here is a pic of some I have sorted out, some have already been painted or powdercoated, many are still in the bags

I don't even know what these are, but they have some paint on them that tells me they were on the cruiser. ANYBODY KNOW????? Looks like they were part of a spare tire carrier

I started the day by getting all the hinges and mounts together for the rear doors and the spare tire door. I decided I better put them all together to make sure I have everything, and they fit together. They did!

If those parts in the pic above go on the spare tire carrier, I haven't the slightest idea where

I got all the doors, window frames, grill, bezel and a whole bunch of other parts sandblasted yesterday, so I primed them all up today. It's november in Minnesota, and it was 64 degrees today. Can't beat that. I was able to do all the spraying outside, which is a BIG PLUS. Now I have to get some color on these parts, and begin reassembly. Still have to paint the outside of the tub, but I have been putting that off. guess that will have to be pretty much next in line after I paint up the hinges, mounts, etc. I am probably going about this in the wrong sequence, but what the heck. I'm in too deep now.

Here is what my shop looks like now. Like a fun house, with everything hanging around drying

Well I got some color on a few parts, at least the inside of them. Need more work, but the goal was to get color on it.

Tub painted

Got color on the tub. All that is left is to color sand everything, and assemble.

I've been assembling, so I thought I would throw up a couple pics of progress so far.

Looks like a truck again! AND I need to clean my camera

Wow!! That is quality work. I wish my resto was that nice. Sadly it just isn't.

You have inspired me to fix my doors (MUCH MUCH WORSE). I will have to bring them home for Christmas and get to work.

Again very nice work. I just need more patience and better skills I guess. Very impressed.

That is a sweet rebuild you've got going! I envy your work space. Keep up the great work. Oh, what type of seats did you put in your rig?
