Beginning the CRAZY FJ40 Rebuild

My liftgate cylinders had the chrome flaking off. Didn't have the time to rechrome, or the funds, so I wire wheeled them off, and used some shrink tube I got at harbor freight for real cheap. Looks a little better, no more chrome flecks cutting the hands.

Finally done!

I am finished with the rebuild, so I thought I would post up a couple pics. Was out driving it, so I deemed it necessary that it had MUD on it!!!

New Direction.....

Well is has been 6 months since I finished the cruiser, and it is a lot of fun to drive this cruiser.

However, I learned a couple things. First of all, I did nothing to the engine. Even though it had been sitting for 25 years, it started with just a jump---on 25 year old gas! So I figured just clean it up and drive it. I probably won't put that many miles on it, so it will be fine. WRONG! I put 2000 miles on it this summer. I drive it almost every day. Gets 13 mpg, but only 200 miles per quart of oil. Engine is tired. a couple of the cylinders are below 100 compression. Rather than o'haul the old 1F, I am going..............DIESEL!!!!! I have 2 other diesels (cummins)' so I might as well make it a family

I worked a deal with Crushers on a 3B and 5 speed, so when he gets the Troopy done, that will be coming my way.

Until that comes, I'll keep driving the 1F, and adding oil. then I'll be back on this thread for the diesel conversion. Should be interesting. Of course, when I get that done, then I am sure it will have to get a turbo sometime in the future. Whoaaaa-I'm getting WAY ahead of myself.

Anyway, That seems to be what winters are for.....work on the cruiser!

If you have been watching, I am knee deep into a BJ74 resto and LHD conversion. Still drive the 40, but I picked up a nice low mileage (55K) 2F and 4 speed. I dropped that in last year. It runs soooo nice, I hate to pull it for the diesel. However, the 3B and H55 are in the corner of the shop awaiting a new home. It's karma---it will get the 3B when the BJ74 is done. Probably a winter project this fall. Stay tuned............. Back on this thread in the fall

Soooo.......

4+ years later, and I thought I would post some updated pics. I really enjoy driving this cruiser. It's become my summer driver, as I haven't put the hard top on in 3 years. I should just sell it. It's been hanging from the ceiling all this time.

I have done a few upgrades, which seems to be a disease with these things. Probably why we all lurk in the parts for sale sections

Switched out the barn doors for a tailgate--much more functional. Got this on a parts rig :)
Upgraded the suspension with an OME 2" lift and shocks.
Added Duratrac 31" tires
Added rear door posts from a FST, and the hoop. Makes running hard doors with a soft top much nicer. Same parts rig as the tailgate
Changed from door mount mirrors to hinge mount, since I run mostly with half doors.
Added an Aux tank--just for range, and to get the gas out of the interior for most of the time. I only fill the Aux tank. Used a fuel door from a parts rig.
Added a toolbox in the front---old ammo box--from a parts rig.
Added Hella lights--yes--parts rig

So much better look and stance, and drivability than the finish pick above.

I rob what I can use from cruisers I buy, then part them out. I'm sick that way.
