Man...this is the kind of thread that makes people do crazy things like blow their savings on a vintage wagon and hit the road with their dog. Nothing wrong with that!

If it's not too late and you're heading down Hwy 1, Plaskett Creek Campground is a good spot about midway between Monterey and San Luis Obispo. Across the highway is Sand Dollar Beach which is my dog's favorite place in the world. Most likely very quiet this time of year.

An interesting alternative route to Plaskett Creek is 101 South to Jolon Rd (King City) to Nacimiento-Ferguson Road, all the way over the mountains to the coast. Beautiful back road drive. You get to cut through Hunter-Ligget Army Base..if you're lucky there will be helicopters doing live fire exercises right above you as you drive through...true story.

Safe travels, thanks for sharing-

Really nice set up man! Is that a Baja Rack?

Awesome rig! I'd love to see it in person. Very functional and great looking too!

Love your truck and thanks for the tip on Tor's storage solution (he is a wizard). Making the trip down to Baja is on my bucket list, so I'm looking forward to more updates and awesome Cruiser/canine photos. Keep 'em coming!

Nice rig! Looks like you have it set up very well too.

I traveled to Baja quite regularly from about 1988 through 2001 when I lived in central and southern CA and even a couple of trips from FL. I'm sure things have changed a bit since then, but common sense will do more for you than anything else. I usually felt pretty safe in Baja. In the early days, we would cross at night to avoid traffic and to maximize our days off work. I stopped doing that after some close calls with cattle on the road. I think it's safer to cross the border and transit the border towns in broad daylight mixed in with all of the other traffic. There are accounts of people getting forced off the road and robbed at night. The only bad experiences I have had at night are being singled out by the city cops and being legally robbed for "creative" traffic infractions. Afterward, those make for good stories around the campfire.
I almost always slept inside the truck and put my gear outside in a tent - as a precaution and it's just more comfortable out of the wind and off the ground.
Happy travels and feliz viaje! Please continue to share the excellent photos!

Head south fast, sounds like a good storm is coming this weekend.

Beautiful

It is trucks like this one and what you do with it that inspires me to want to get a FJ60 or 62 and go find myself in the world!

Nothing like being in a classic rig and hitting the California Coastline, especially with man's best friend for some peace and happiness.

I love this truck. Amazing build! Good luck on you journey. Keep the pics coming many of us are living vicariously right now.

Looks like you're in my current backyard at the moment. Wish I knew when you were through town (Morro Bay), I would have parked my 60 on the overpass, climbed on top and saluted as you pass! Then, chase you down so I can drool on that fantastic ride of yours. May you have amazing and inspiring adventures sir!

Spotted some Sea Lions in between Monterey and Carmel yesterday. There are a few established/tourist spots to see and hear them but it's way more fun to hike out onto more remote cliffs and find them:

Ended up camping on Pismo Beach which I think is amazing....it's $10 to camp overnight! Crazy cheap for California and where else can you see an Model T on the beach and a kiteboarder at the same time?

Hope yall have a good week!

Mexico is amazing. Farmall tractor launching a boat near San Isidro:

My truck is squeaking like crazy on all the washboard roads, was hoping it just needed some grease in the shackles but no dice. Was a rad experience...200 pesos (~$20/USD) for him to lube all my joints and shackles and give me a bolt for my lose muffler hanger.

Great pictures and a seemingly great experience thus far. You have a good, aesthetic eye.

Not to be conceited but...it feels more satisfying in a 60, doesn't it? The pooch certainly realizes he looks cool....

Loved every minute so far! I did break a motor mount today so we'll see how I feel tomorrow.....heading south from here it's "real Baja" they say :)

And if anyone is traveling Baja and reads this, between Tijuana and El Rosario there're more Pemex gas stations than you can count + lots of new ones under construction.
