Does anyone have experience with Duracell Ultra Gold batteries? They seem to have good specs and don't cost a huge amount. Not everyone is up for a $300+ battery.

No complaints. I get 3+ years out of them in Arizona. About the same as Exide, Die-Hard Platinum, etc that I have tried.

On the other hand, the Optima did so well in Northwest Territory and Alberta winters that it's going to be challenging for me to convince myself that switching is a great idea. Help me out?

Based on This comment I assume you are in Canada. If so, it may be worth considering the Motomaster AGM batteries at Canadian tire. I've had mine now for 3 years (about 60,000 kms) and haven't had any issues. I'm not sure what they offer for warranty now, but when I got mine they came with a 5 year warranty which was longer than any other batteries I looked at. I think they cost almost twice as much as lead-acid batteries, but the warranty was also twice as long. Also the set of lead-acid batteries I had before these failed right after the warranty period and leaked and made a mess of the battery tie downs.

I purchased my Cruiser in 2012 with a Duralast Gold 24F and it went 5 years mostly trouble free. I finally replaced it with a Costco Interstate 24F for ~$88. The Interstate is the exact same battery as the Duralast Gold except for changed to the color of the plastic. I believe they are both made by Johnson Controls. The Costco Interstate has struggled a bit since it has both starting and house duties. The fridge really puts a beating on the battery. Eventually I will setup dual batteries and have a pair of 24F's under the hood.

I have gone through two of these and had warranty claims refused (less than 4 years). If you read the fine print on the "warranty", freezing is not covered - in CANADA! How does an AGM freeze? Nigh impossible, but any distortion in the casing - that's what Crappytire will claim and good luck arguing your case. Even the battery manufacturer (NorthStar) will tell you that they cannot freeze. IMHO - stay away from Crappytire. OEM Toyotas last longer for half the price.

Odyssey is about 10% more, if you shop around, for a MUCH better battery from a company that actually honors their warranty.

I run Interstate. Usually lasts about seven to nine years. Having five vehicles, I now ask for the blemished battery when I go in to the Interstate warehouse. 90 day warranty but at a third of the price I am willing to gamble with this many of their units in my fleet. Blue top for the house battery in Georgine though. I need my beverages to stay cold in the cheap refrigerator......

It is funny, I walk in to the warehouse and see Volvo, Honda, and other manufactures stickers for batteries. Same battery, different stickers and associated warranties. FWIW.

That's what I have in mine (the Duracell 24F). Fired up the cruiser at 10F yesterday morning with ease. I ran an Interstate battery previously and it lasted 7 years before getting weak in colder weather.

Seeing all these grommet-less battery trays is helping me cope with my grommet-less tray...

Walmart Everstart Maxx (that's right, two X's). I sometimes leave it for weeks at a time in the winter with no tender, fires right up on a 0* morning. I have left it for over a month and accidentally left the dome light on overnight at least twice in that period. Fired up like I had just stopped at the 7eleven for a big gulp. Run them in two rigs. Ran on my wife's car, which thoroughly killed the battery due to an alternator issue... just plopped it on the desk at Walmart and got a brand new one. I see no reason to spend a dime more unless you need marine (they also sell marine at Walmart).

Flamesuit on. :flipoff2:

I’ve had the Duralast gold in my 80 for 5 years now. It’s at the point where if I don’t put it on the tender on it, it will be damn near dead 2-3 days after parking it. I will most likely go with the same battery or test out the Costco interstate. When it dies completely.

Some people say the Costco line is not as good as the 'real' MTPs but we'll see.
Costco buys in such mass bulk they get manufacturing to make special runs for them. TVs will have almost exact specs, minus an input and such. They undercut prices of competition by buying in rediculous bulk. Quality is typically great, but they have had issues with some product (mostly clothing)

Does the group 65 battery fit without any issues in the factory mounting location with bracket?
