It seems my batteries didnt survive the winch fest on trail 16 so im in the market for new ones (2). Ive had optimas for a long time but dont hear very good things about them anymore. What are you guys useing? What do you recommend?

I have been replacing my optimas as they die with sears platinum. Not a cheap battery but they have a great warranty and if you watch you can find them on sale. I still run wet cell in my tow rig from sams club. cheap and easy on it.

Sears platinum diehard is what I'm running after the premature deaths of two optima yellow tops.

I've been running AZ's Duralast gold (yellow one) for a while now. Been fine for me, they prorate them so if it goes bad for some reason, they will at least give you some cash towards anther one, even years later.

Are those duralast batts AGM ? I never had any luck with standard lead acid batts in the 40. I think all the bouncing around in the cove kills them.

I have the autozone gold top batteries too.....they have worked ok for me, don't think they are AGM though.

O`Reilly sell a FGM in most sizes they are made by East Penn way better warranty & battery than Red top!
oh! and a lot better price.

to tell if it is a FGM the last letters in there part # will b ***** FGM.

I bought the AGM house brand from OReilly. My Toyota battery had been dead every time I went to go crank it lately. Been working like a champ since. I hadn't heard good things about the Optimas lately either. The OReilly battery was almost 80 bucks cheaper too.

the red top Optima don!t like to sit say a`week or two with out use unless a full disconnect

i have one last yellow Optima when made in Aurora Co date on battery 8/3 still going strong
guess if n when it dies will have to give it a proper burial

Glad you started this thread. I have a yellow top optima that I bought because I had a parasitic drain, which I think I have fixed, but before it would regularly drain and I would have to charge it. the Cruiser only gets driven once in a blue moon, so I keep a battery tender on it.

But it looks like a Sears might be where I go after it is finally un-resurectable...

I think the Sears AGM batteries are good (there is a recent thread on that..I'll post up over here if I find it)... but the platinum Sears AGM is somethign like $200 a piece.

I went into some serious detail in a PM and a battery thread somewhere recently but I'll give you the short version of my opinion here...

AGM for sure (I think you've already decided this though).
Sears Platinum I've heard good things about, however, I went with the Auto Zone battery simply for availability reasons (any common parts store would work). Case and point is this: If you're at an event and you end up killing a battery, what are the odds that there's a Sears nearby your wheeling spot compared to there being an Auto Zone, Advance, O'Reilly, Napa, etc? The ease of getting one replaced anywhere I am in the country was my #1 reason for NOT going with a Sears battery.

I've heard great things about the sears platinum, but I also liked Steve's thinking on ease of replacement from a more common parts store. I went with the auto zone gold, I've had good luck with them in the past and decided to just stick with it.
