Can someone skool me on the difference between the Federal '79 carburetor and the California version?

They look the same on the SOR identifier page.
Yes, I too would love an education on the difference.

It is quite possible that they used the same pic for both; they are not infallible. Neither am I.

That said, look at the picture for the’78 and you will notice a filter and bracket covering part of the sight glass. IIRC (I’m not in the shop) In the’79-‘80, the filter was moved to the side of the carb for the same market.

My other reason for thinking that they reused the same picture is that in both pics the sample they used has a plug over the return line. Since I recall that Aisan stopped machining that hole part way into the year, I think it’s a little more than a coincidence that both samples have the plug.

Oh powerful Mudulator’s of this thread, please grant this thread the opportunity to bestow its wisdom upon all those who may cast their gaze upon it, both the knowledge within and the knowledge to come!

So, while we wait, I want to share the spacer that will replace this one that for all intents and purposes is the same one:

Only found one Mark, but I found one.
I’ll try to fix up the one I busted but will keep going on this thread for the tech.

Doesn't fit the usual date code, unless the last digit is federal versus California?

March 20th '79?
Yeah, don’t think it’s a date code but I’m John Snow here.

Still hoping to be able to move this thread over to tech…

I got my Keyster kits in, rebuilding a ‘77 carb along with this ‘79. There are no jets in either kit unfortunately. The jets from both are tore up but the ones from the ‘77 are really bad though the carb is generally in better shape.

But I can’t read the sizes on any of the main jets.
Just need to figure out the different market attributes of these.

That front face pic is sad. Ive had a couple of those come through the shop. Secondary diaphram so badly off the mark that you just have to wonder: how could they not know?

Ha, yeah. Surprisingly it holds vacuum and looks good inside. This whole carb is actually in relatively great shape except for the jets being mangled and the pump seal being half on and half off. I think someone didn’t realize the pump was jacked and kept futzing with the jets and gave up on it.

It cost me a high five and a dad joke so I can’t complain.
