Crazy! I did not see those when I made that last post a minute ago. This new software seems to have a few "features" that take some getting used to...

Thanks tatat.

My opinion: Toyota wasn't real committed to a three point seat belt, yet and just put some attachment points anywhere. I don't think they gave it much thought. Way too far back. Look at Chris's earlier picture and you can see the front Ford seats have the belt right next to your head.

What's everybody think....

Frankly I am amazed that they were even thinking about 3-point belts when designing the Pig back in 1968...

Pablo,

according to Chris's link, http://wescoperformance.stores.yahoo.net/seatbelts.html, 1968 was the first year for the shoulder harness, on the front seat. I guess Toyota read the writing on the wall and started putting on the rear mounts, even though they covered the hole up with the headliner.

I looked at JMack's link and the visual of the shoulder harness, creeped me out. :)

That's not how my 71 is. I guess later years they decided to make it right. My attempt at a bow anchor is on the left. The seat belt anchor has three spot welds on each side.

Interesting!
I went back through my photos when I had my headliner out. I did not take detailed pics of the seatbelt anchors in the roof rail, but you can see here the '74 anchor - much different than your '71...

Who would of thought seatbelts would get so involved. I'm guessing somewhere a long the line, when the shoulder harness became mandatory, Toyota redesigned the mount.

Why so far back and why did some countries get different mount locations?

Brenno, thanks for the picture.

I found the thread where I had pics of seat belt mounts in the upper pillars:

I went with some period-correct adjustable (not retractable) 3-point belts that i got from riderjgs. I used the mounting locations in the roof rail, above the rear doors. They work alright.

I think if you wanted to put a mount in the B pillars, you would want to weld the nut to some steel plate (maybe 3" x 3", or 2"x4") and then snake that plate w/ nut into the B pillar and then weld that in so you don't pull the nut through the sheet metal of the pillar in the unfortunate event that you need those belts.

I have seen 2 different 55s from Oz that do have 3-point seat belt mounts in the B & C pillars, but cannot find any documentation about the difference between the Oz Pigs and the ones we got here in the States...

Pablo,

I was rereading your other thread on the seat belts and seen Guppie's picture, #5 post. His is like mine, spot welded. Toyota hadn't started forming them in body yet? Somewhere between 71 and 74, they switched over.

I'm going to weld my rears in the C pillar and the retractor right above the small cover plate for the wire cable. If they don't work out safely, I'll switch back to the stock mount.

With Toyota, everything is a mystery.

One idea presents itself here when this Pig came up for sale: For Sale: - 1976 FJ 55 Texas-- 47,311 original miles

My Pig does not have the shoulder point mount in the C-pillar, but I like this idea b/c I think it would be a reasonable run for the belt to reach back to the mount I do have above the cargo glass. I might try something like this w/ a new set of 3-point retractables...

Pictures show - overall view, retractor mount, shouder point mount on C-pillar, and then other end of lap belt mount (opposite of latch end).

I would think that about half way up the c pillar should be good. as for sturdiness, I haven't got any great ideas...I would like to be able to get a large flange behind the sheet metal if I could...give me some ideas...

YESSSS^^^^^exactly what I was thinking of thinking about:hillbilly:
