I watched a bunch of youtube videos when I did my sheet metal. So far nothing has fallen off. Mig was easy...just practice on some scraps before hand so you can get your temperature/speeds down.
Mine was a Hobart and I replaced it with another Hobart. They are great welders for a good price. If you are patent you should be able to get a good brand name on CL for a decent price.
Anyone here a self taught welder? I've read around and seems a mug welder is a good start for just learning and basic metal fab any advice on the topic would be awesome
Yea, self taught here also. Bought a book and did some reading - there are a lot of good resources online including YouTube videos. Been thinking about taking a class at PPCC and becoming less of a hack, but it's pricey.
Second Luke's suggestion about waiting for a decent machine. I started with a very cheap 2nd hand flux core - harbor freight would probably have been an upgrade. Things got hugely better when I got my Hobart Handler
Black95- yeah I think I'm gonna try to see if they do a class at the auto shop here on carson and get a few books to check out as well. Thanks for the heads up cuz I was going to go check out harbor freight!
70cruiser- youtube is king learned how to whistle loud as hell with my hand so I'm sure I can pick up welding haha I've got some good scrap metal already to practice on and finally a garage so let the fun begin.
CO_hunter - I'm gonna have to take that advice and wait for sure I think it'll be better in the long run to get good tools but when is that ever not the case.
Fitz- hey I'll be happy to give you this other seat for a good deal! Let me know what your thinking so I can run it by the boss. It all depends on her we just had our baby this morning at 0150 if the 60 didn't break down she was gonna come home in it but oh well next time.
EricG- yeah that was something I wanted to do to was check out the local CC and see what classes they have might give that a try later down the road. For now self taught is the best taught and I think I'm gonna have to just stick with quality tools now vs economy after hearing from everyone.
My goal is to just start with just welding on a new muffler and then maybe work my way up to sliders with whatever scrap metal I find mostly to practice but who knows maybe I'll make something useful for the 60!

I'm pretty sure Leon just got around $325ish for his Handler 130, so I'd probably take about the same for my Handler 140 (10 more Handlers!!!). How about $300 since you were kind with the seat cover (Reverend Horton Heat sticker included). Here's a link to the Handler 140 (http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200471413_200471413).
No pressure man, just let me know if you're interested.
Travis, I did get $325, I advertised it a work as well for $350 and that is where it sold. Got contacts from CL, not a ton but they were steady so I feel it was a fair price. You shouldn't have too much trouble selling it.
I think it was a 135, so maybe it was 5 more Handlers
Get the book, get a Red, Blue, or tan welder and some scrap. Buzz away and it will start to make sense. Practice on non-essential stuff until you feel comfortable and an experienced welder OK's your work. If you can get a 220 with gas. Will be enough welder you should only need one.
Thanks everyone! She's a sweet little thing 7lbs 3oz!
Sorry Travis were gonna have to wait till summer before I get to get any new toys it looks like I still have to get some stuff for our pop up camper before I get more toys for the trucks...
Good news is that they have a few different welders at the auto shop here on post and it's like 10$ an hour to use so I'll just get some of the guys there to show me a thing or two and see what happens from there who knows maybe I'll be absolutely awful and just need to pay someone to do my welding haha
As for time to pick it up... Of course I will! I can't walk by my 60 without him trying to get in and drive it or try to stick a screwdriver in some random place on the truck! So it's not so much I'm learning for my hobby but cuz my son loves it... That's good enough justification right?! Lol plus who needs sleep learn at night!

No worries man, $10 an hour to play with the welders on the base and possibly get some help from guys who know what they are doing sounds like an ideal situation.
Have fun with the little one!
Let me know if you need any little kid stuff (clothes, toys, etc.), we've got a bunch of that stuff that we're looking to find a new home for.
One more thing- it took me a while to get it in my thick head that when welding, cleanliness is a major benefit. Everything should be as clean and bright as it can be. With exhaust, get the alumanized coating off the tube first. And don't use chlorinated brake cleaners!!! They release poison gas when heated. Something I used to do a lot, don't know why I'm not dead. Lol.
Yeah seems like a good deal to figure that stuff out but I'll find out more next time I go out there once the truck is up in running I wanna swap the oil in the diffs it's pretty cheap there so why not. And I'll pass that offer onto the wife! Thanks Travis
Welding in poison gas nice.. Worst I did was stare at the light when I was a kid at at the machine shop lol
On another note when measuring like the lift of a truck is it from the ground to the top of the fender or from the hub? I did the ground up and my rear end is like 2in lower... Guess those add a leafs weren't as nice as I thought lol

Don't know if it's the best approach, but I do hub to fender (I have an obvious flat spot on the fender that I mark). Keeps things like tire pressure and tire size out of the equation.
Front fenders are usually cut higher. I measure at the body line nearest the tires, it at the pinch seam under the rocker just behind the front tire, and in front of the back.
Travis has a metric tape measure if you need one. Haha.
I'm gonna try a few different ways just to see if the rear is sagging at all. But until the truck is running again I've just gone ahead and decided I was done being jealous of how nice Travis's carpet in his 60 came out after he cleaned it and give it a go in mine haha
Carpet didn't really get any cleaner but I did find some of that insulation sound reduction padding from my old 4Runner put that under the original carpet actually sounds a little quieter but then again I did cut off the muffler... So maybe it'll be better with the new muffler.
New plan gonna try to dye it...
Side note anyone around here play golf and is a lefty?
