I would not put a D44 in my worst enemy’s rig. If they planned on running anything more than to the grocery store . Here is why . That thing snapped like hot butter and when they do they take out the ball joints. But hey you do what you want
I remember that thing didn't even make noise. Just twisted apart and broke like it was soft. Of course I broke a hub same spot this year. No more of that next year...

It’s funny, I make that statement about no one parting out an ‘80 around here and stumble across a guy who seems to be parting out a grey market RHD ‘80. Ad was for a manual 5spd, but mentioned he had axles as well. He wants $1500 w/o the locking 3rds- I’d be going a different locker anyway.
Got me thinking about a RuffStuff 9.5 housing. I could cut the knuckles off the ‘80 axle. Seems like a lot for axles without 3rds. I’ll think about it.

Seems a bit high to me.
Especially since the front is only good for a swap.
It’s not a direct replacement for a LHD as the panhard mount is on the wrong side.
Keep looking there out there.
I picked up a complete set front & rear with open diffs for $700 in really good shape.
You can cut the balls off your stock axles and add extension sleeves to both sides from 4plus products. You will gain about 5" of width. You could also install 80 balls at the same time. I believe some companies sell them. Or weld on dana 60 C's

This.... I am sure he still has sleeves. He just ran another batch of them. I bought 6 for some reason????? I end up buying stuff that is hard to get when it is available. Kind of like a rainy day fund. Several vendors sell the 80 balls.

I’ve considered the sleeves. For my case, I believe, I have ball and claw axles. I won’t know until I start tearing in to them, but it’s a ‘66 with drums. I could be mistaken, but I think that means the ball isn’t desirable either. The advantage of getting the 80 front axle is just the knuckle balls and out hardware. Possibly the shafts until I go chromoly.
I’m having trouble finding a shop that sells their own 80 balls. I think I read that TrailTailor is closing shop, but I may have misunderstood the post. Diamond only sells them attached to their axles and I’m leery of that process given the reviews. RuffStuff seems hit or miss on hellfire stuff being in stock. TrailGear does have them; anyone have a review?
Mine came from Diamond. Calling and not being in a hurry helps. Same with my Hellfire knuckle stuff. Called and waited. Not an ideal situation, but building is rarely immediate anyways

You were fast with it too! I'm gonna use the 80 axles under a 3rd gen 4Runner I think. The Seqouia can't be abused this much anymore and the boys are almost old enough to learn a little bit soon
I got lucky and found a front axle minus the third and FF rear from one 80 at a pull and save and a complete SF rear from another. Traded the ABS knuckles for a set of non-abs with a guy that was converting to slee high steer.
Going to a fabricated housing and aftermarket knuckle balls means you have to either buy the rest of the axle parts (spindles, hubs, brakes etc) new or find a donor axle. The cost makes that a lot less attractive than the junkyard axles. At that point I would consider going straight to 05+ super duty axles or running super duty outers on a fabbed housing. The SD axles are super common and easy to get for cheap.
Bought for a solid axle swap project but decided to go another route as far as what axles I’m using. Will trade for a 9” ford rear end with matching Dana 44 front Supposably from a 94 Land Cruiser
I'm planning on SAS swapping my 3rd gen and I'm on the hunt for a driver drop axl, to keep my Eco crawler duals.
Im not interested in tons, I'm considering a Waggy 44 or flipping an 80 series front and sticking with 35s or maybe going 37 max. I mostly crawl but need highway road manners.
Not looking to hijack, just saying hi and why I'm here; my other rig is an 80.
