I never did get a weight on everything I don’t have a scale in my garage but I can tell you it’s probably 400lbs lighter than the 1hdt I pulled out originally
I don’t think the engine brake will work anymore but I actually haven’t tried yet

No start stop crap

I don’t know what you mean by engine plans

And I plan on getting the new Dakota digital gauges probably in a couple weeks but I’m just using my edge monitor at the moment
Thanks for the answers, by plans I meant Were you planning on changes to anything on it? Such as simplifying the cooling system as you mentioned earlier to clean up the left side, and going with Dakota Digital gauges instead of stock or Gm gauges.
Keep up the good work, this seems like a nice balance between improved performance / fuel economy / availability vs cost.

Gotcha yes I plan on designing a normal thermostat housing to get rid of the active thermal management crap and to make this swap easier for the next guy. I plan on just getting the Dakota gauges here soon they are to easy not to get

Very cool swap, I was wondering when/if ever someone was going to do this. Would be interested in fuel figures for conservative driving as well as however it is you drive normally (for scientific purposes ;))

I'm also curious, how busy and complex is that engine after all the deleting you did? Nice to have an M57 equivalent that will be more readily available in North America.

I really wish I wouldve seen this before my 1HDFTE mission. 😅. Now I feel like I need a bigger turbo to make me feel better about those torque numbers.

If I was to do another diesel swap, I think I'd lean towards this. The logistics of finding and buying all the s*** you need for an FTE get expensive FAST.

Not sure if you've already posted it, but I'd be interested to compare the cost of your conversion to my FTE conversion which has easily passed 20k.

Exactly. Honestly, my first choice would be to stay with a Toyota diesel engine, but importing makes them expensive and relatively difficult to get.

They are expensive but not difficult to get.

I personally don’t understand these oddball swaps other than “just because I can”.

The amount of upgrades and continued support for the 1HDFTE makes it the ideal swap in my opinion for a diesel. Not to mention it’s a Land Cruiser engine, electronic but not common rail and is tried and true (meaning beyond tested in all forms from stock to race built). Only downfall is non-US engine and expensive.

Cheers

Are you crazy! 🤦‍♂️😂

Ya you can have $20-65k in an FTE swap but it is the best Toyota ever made. Yours is currently a 💩 no offense but until to spend another $10-15k on it it’s a fairly unimpressive engine. Get it over 300hp and 600+ftlbs and if that doesn’t do it for you, you need a Jeep with a hemi! 😝

Cheers

pretty cool. would love to check it out if you're ever passing through idaho. do you have to have all the emissions stuff on there in your state (sorry if I missed a discussion of that earlier in this thread)?

I think that's the point most of the time. I don't think anyone's realistically expecting to recoup the cost of the swap in fuel savings. If someone's goal is more power, the easiest way would be to just boost what's in there. A swap is a project of pride, passion, and an expression of the owner's ideal driveline for the platform in question. IMO, LS swaps are trite at this point, but plenty of people still do them and that's cool in my book. I'm waiting for some corn-fed, hee-haw redneck to throw a 6V53 at a Land Cruiser of any vintage.

Personally, I'd be interested to see how a low lag turbo (or a GOOD supercharger; not this M62 garbage) setup on the 1FZ would compare to a well tuned FTE in terms of area under the curve, particularly below 3000 RPM.

Id say im actually being logical. I love the FTE platform and dont regret it one bit, its far better than the tired 1fz I had. But when you're spending your own money and not someone else's on builds its easy for it to lose some luster.

Not from the engines performance or anything, but the shear legwork you have to do to track everything down, from other markets or like i did import a whole vehicle, i got lucky with that.

Sure I had time to pour over parts diagrams, see whats compatible, and if it is. Is it even still available? To be in contact with japanese auction vendors, looking at 100s of HDJ100's until i found the perfect one. Then actually winning the bid, a lot of people dont have that time.

My final point is, if people want, a diesel power plant and they dont care who makes that diesel, and they dont have a blank check from someone else funding it, this looks like a solid option.

I should've added about half of it is the h152f lol.

Then I should have added an extra  . On the subject of diesel 80's, I bowed out of the 80 scene back in 2018 and got back into it a few months ago. One thing I've noticed is just how many imported diesel 80's are out there now. It makes me want to find a LHD FTE rig if they even exist.

European market HDJ100's through 2007.

With the right turbo, an FTE can be on full boost under 2,000rpms and hold that to redline. Power generally drops off though above 3-3.5krpms just like most diesels. Full boost being 15, 20, 30 or all the way up to 50psi which people in Australia have been doing. Depends on how it is all setup.

And let me tell you, 30psi with the right tune on an FTE is a riot! I don’t even know what 40+ is like but can’t imagine needing it for anything. You can achieve 400hp with 40 though.

Cheers

Well that’s a shame you feel that way. Why not have just gone Cummins then?

I been pumping my own $$$ into my own rigs for 25+yrs my man. Well over a dozen now in that time, some upwards of $100k into it.

This one here is mine, sold another diesel 80 after spending $15k on that one to fix it only to take all the profit and dump it into this Cruiser. I got an easy $25k in the engine/trans/tcase/BlackBox and front axle. Probably a fair share more, I keep track in a file but don’t know $$$ invested off the top of my head. If I could do it again, I wouldn’t even mess with the FT and just go straight to FTE.

Then there is my daily driver. It’s taken five years but I have way over $50k in it now, at least $25k in parts just under the hood.

So ya I spend plenty of my own hard earned money on my own Cruisers as well as massive amounts of my free time.

Cheers

Cool, you're still oblivious to the point im making. I am already satisfied with MY 1hdfte. Can't wait to throw a UFI 21L on it, and it get close to the 300hp range.

For a diesel swap, that is not a heavy ass cummins, that's easy to attain from domestic markets. This looks like it could be a great swap.

Thats all im saying, if you cant see that. I dont know how else to explain it lol.

This.

If you come to Idaho, I'll drive the 2.5hrs to DVS to see this beast. We have a Suburban with the Mini-Max in it and I have daydreamed about that motor in my 80. I gotta see this thing so that we can convince Dave to create a swap-kit for that engine!

No I am not oblivious to your point.

I responded to your post which you quoted me.
