pretty cool. would love to check it out if you're ever passing through idaho. do you have to have all the emissions stuff on there in your state (sorry if I missed a discussion of that earlier in this thread)?
Thanks but no I don’t have emissions where I live so it is completely deleted, I’m not sure all that enissions crap off the side of these engines would fit in anything

This.

If you come to Idaho, I'll drive the 2.5hrs to DVS to see this beast. We have a Suburban with the Mini-Max in it and I have daydreamed about that motor in my 80. I gotta see this thing so that we can convince Dave to create a swap-kit for that engine!
Idaho is a haul for me lol but I do plan on taking this on a Moab trip in November

@Drewthecarguy this is nuts in the best possible way. Wow. I changed a turbo on my FT and it took 2 years.

Can you explain it to my like I am a 4 year old why it would take you more than 3 days to complete my swap and bring back to my house? I just don't get it.

I’m not sure why it would take more then 3 days
I freaking love it dude.

I can't remember who said he was sitting a bunch of GM diesels at his shop a few years ago. The final word was it cannot be done, mostly due to the ECM.
I can't remember if it was Georg or someone else.

Thanks to you this 3.0 diesel is no longer a swap virgin.

Nothing is impossible, someone just has to figure things out, Mitch at swaptime is a genius, I’m just the mechanical side of things

They are expensive but not difficult to get.

I personally don’t understand these oddball swaps other than “just because I can”.

The amount of upgrades and continued support for the 1HDFTE makes it the ideal swap in my opinion for a diesel. Not to mention it’s a Land Cruiser engine, electronic but not common rail and is tried and true (meaning beyond tested in all forms from stock to race built). Only downfall is non-US engine and expensive.

Cheers
"Not difficult to get" is a relative term. I'm sure the process is fairly straightforward if you're familiar with it, but it was already expensive and it's only getting more so. If money were no object, I might just pony up and have one of the higher end shops build me a "wish list" 80, but my toy budget isn't THAT big. I'm not saying the prices aren't fair, just that I'm not looking to pay them at the moment.

Meanwhile, it looks like I can get this engine WITH modern auto with higher and lower gears for less than I'd have onto the Toy diesel engine. I'm a capable hand with mechanical work, fab work and wiring, so I'm capable of doing the swap myself ( though I'm not above letting someone else work the bugs out). Something like this could make driving my 80 more practical on a daily basis which is a big win in my book. We'll see how the real world results compare to his 30mpg hopes.

As for why not a Cummins, for my part, all other things more or less equal, I'd always rather lose weight than gain it.

Also keep in mind these engines and transmissions are in every local salvage yard with less than 15k miles. Good luck getting any 1hdfte with those kind of miles

I was wondering about that. There is a ton of emissions equipment post turbo that initially ruled out the engine for me due to possible clearance issues, besides the ECM being locked. At the time, I didn't know my state doesn't care about emissions after 15 years...

Speaking of unlocking ECMs, it looks like prices have come way down...

I was going to add, and Drewthecarguy just posted this. Parts and Engine availability, at least in the US market, is a huge difference. It is no contest between an out-of-market motor and an in-market motor...

Yes, one could send way huge money modifying a Toyota diesel, and you might still end up with less power than a unmodified GM motor. I mean, one can also throw go fast parts at a GM motor as well. Dollar for Dollar, it is no contest.

I am looking forward to seeing the progress on this LM2 swap.

I'm really looking forward to hearing long-term feedback on this... what are the bugs, and how did you work them out. Y'know, provided you don't decide to swap in something else next month. 😆
Next month?1?
This week, probably!!
Keep up, man!

Subscribed. Very cool. Even if my heavy ass Cummins did get called phat.

A 1HDFTE is still available as a new long block.

I personally don't know much about this GM engine, is it common rail? DPF? What is j/y price on these 15k mile engines? How long has this platform been on the market?

Cheers

Answered most of my own questions quickly by searching.

Ya, no thanks. All kinds of things I don't like, this is a Land Cruiser forum so I am sticking to my opinion that the 1HDx series of engines far exceed this platform for a variety of reasons.

All I see as a benefit is perhaps cheapish to acquire. Decent power numbers I suppose too in stock form. Example;

Not been on the market long enough to be tried and true. Potential probs with pumps and injectors as well as other known issues. How reliable will these be in 20yrs? Aluminum block & head on a diesel, I prefer cast iron head & block. I could go on. I will stop being the hater in this thread though as a lot of you seem pretty excited about this swap.

Cheers

For me the wet belt driven oil pump and chain driven inj pump is a no go. Ill stick with my 1fz, can buy a s*** load of gasoline for the swap cost!
