Attempting the next best engine swap for 80s IMO

Yea the factory silverado with the 3.0 Duramax has a 3.23 rear gear and a 32 inch tire. With the stock 4.10s on 37s I’m still high geared. If that makes sense. To be the same as the factory Silverado. I either need a 40 inch tire or a 3.73 gear set. So i could possibly gain MPG if I went to a 40 lol..

We just put the Sumo gears in my T-case based on my conversation with Tor. Hoping that and 35s will give me good drivability and efficiency. Planning to add lockers soon, so re-gearing at that time wouldn’t be a huge expense if I decide 4.10s are still too deep.

Personally, I might be willing to sacrifice the last little bit of mileage potential for the lower gearing offroad. I also think the wider range overall would make a one of those 3.11:1 low range gearsets very usable.

If you drive a vehicle 100k and get 28 mpg vs 25 mpg, you’ll spend 1300 bucks more if gas is 3$.
I personally don’t build anything to save 1300 bucks, it’s all about smiles per gallon. We’re here to spend it!

I live in Oregon... I managed to find gas for $3.19 the other day and that felt like a bargain. Still, my interest in mileage is always just as much about range as it is the cost. I take a lot of "shortcuts" through forest lands, and the route that's open on the GPS doesn't always pan out. Sometimes I have to backtrack a LONG way. In the end, 25 or 28... it's still loads better than the 14 the old 1FZ is getting!

hmm that seems high in comparison with my 13.3.... However today I was driving it and thinking, I wonder If i would do an engine swap on this one or just get another one and do it on that one because I hate moving from something that already works well.

In over 5 decades of driving I never once purchased a vehicle based on its miles per gallon. 🤷‍♂️

I think you guys are missing the point. If you think I did this swap just for fuel mileage wouldn’t you think there are a million different options out there?

This engine and transmission setup is more fun to drive than the LT1.

500lbs of torque at very low RPM and 30mpg im curious on what you think would be better?

I’m not trying to debate but if you want smiles per gallon, it’s hard to beat a turbo whistle 10 speed diesel

Nah, I think we are on your side! Sorry if I said something to indicate otherwise.
Nothing could be better than torque and 30mpg is just the cherry on top.
Love the swap.
Sounds like it’s more fun to drive than a 12V /NV4500 40 series.

No I didn’t think you said anything to indicate otherwise. I don’t want people to think I just did this swap for MPG.

Nope, I was saying that I always drive what I like and I would like this swap !
I have a perfect candidate setting in the back yard with a bad motor a locked 80 with a clean rust free body

Or, they live in beautiful California, where all 80’s go to live their best life….and/or die.
In all seriousness, this is the part of owning an 80 that I dislike. It's impossible to just go get a junk yard part, like every other old car I've ever owned, because there aren't any in the junk yards. They're all still on the road, or in back yards in CA, I guess.

I think most people who claim to have this fantastic ghost are lying for internet cred. 😝
Thems fighting words and I don't need internet creed💪

Got here for a song and the undercarriage has never seen a rock. Zero rust 🤠k924

The day I drug her home.

But you can get most anything from the part out guys, you just have to pay more 😁

High jack over. Drew if you prefer I can delete the none relevant posts.
