The thermometer is a great idea for any freezer owner... Engel has one they make (didn't see if someone already mentioned that).

Yep, and some fridges now come with the thermo reading right on the control panel. But like I said, I prefer to be able to monitor it from the drivers seat. Actually, I am surprised that the fridge mfg's. haven't come up with a sensor that is either wireless, with a remote readout, or at least a jack on the fridge, to accept a wire lead that can be run to a remote readout panel. The panel could be really small. Seems like a low-cost add-on that would be a considerable asset to the user.

[EDIT] Scratch that, I just checked Pangaea expeditions and to quote the product description on their site:

"The Engel Thermometer comes with a 18' probe length so that you can keep your thermometer reading in a convenient location like the near the drivers seat, while the freezer can be clear in the back of your 4x4."

Thats the one I carry... Havn't installed mine, but a few customers have. The only Engel that has the built in is the ARB branded 42qt, the Engel 42 does not in the US. It was a special edition in Aus that ARB decided to run with. It is only in Celcius too whereas the Engel remote thermometer is in both USCS & metric

Mounted mine in my 80 by the e-brake, ran the cord under the pass. seat, along the pass. side and into the fridge, still have 2' of cord.

BTW, good luck getting them from Pangea. Tried to order 6 of them for myself and friends - back-ordered, no communication, no follow-up.

I finally got them from somewhere else, but now that Kurt is dealing Engel, I'd get them from him.

Hmmm... that's strange. Was this by any chance very recently? Nathan is in Africa right now navigating a TLC in the Ouback Challenge Morocco. Maybe that has something to do with it? Although Pangea has staff that is still running the shop while he is away... I am sure there is some kind of explanation.

Kinda funny. Nathan (PANGAEA Expeditions) IS in Morocco and has been for a week at Outback Challenge Morocco. I am answering phones and filling orders in his stead and I've only received one call for an Engel thermometer and it was sent out that day from our stockpile of Engel thermometers. Hope you got a good price :)

Yeah, not sure what the deal is. I have tried for a few months to get in touch with him regarding a trip to Africa he is doing in May of 07 that 3 friends and i would like to go on. I have emailed him, phoned him, no reply. I guess our $15k+ isnt green enough! :D

And Yes, this was WELL before (at least a month) they left for Morrocco! :D There are 4 of us looking to do a Safari and his name and company were the first that came up. We are now looking for other guide services.

It varies by model for the temp settings. I use a gauge in the dash to monitor temp. For example, the brand new ARB fridge in the 4Runner I am testing will freeze the contents at 2; however, the Engel I have in the Tacoma (a few years old) needs to run at 2.5. Use a gauge, as even how you pack the fridge or how full it is will affect the temps.....

As for the fridges, i recommend using the thermometer at all times! I have the 45 Norcold and it will freeze stuff at 2.0 without the transit bag and @ 1.8 or so when i am using the bag. It also varies on how full it is and whats in it.

Before i had the bag, i had it on 1.9 or so in baja on a first of 4 day trip and it had frozen all 12 eggs that were in there and they exploded and made quite a mess! The day i got back from that trip, i bought a thermometer!

I got my transitbag and thermometer from:

http://www.compactappliance.com/ and have been super happy in my dealings with them

Engel Thermoter I Have And Recommend

Kevin-Will the cord reach the front of your 80 with the fridge in the back? That looks like something I want.

Hey Andrew

Havent tried it yet, but it is VERY long. I am going to guess that that is why it is so long. I just stuff the themometer between the handle and the fridge for now and it works great. I am going on a 3 day trip leaving tonight and when i get back i am going to re-route the wiring and try to mount it up front right next to the shifter in that open space on the flat area around the shifter.

This was about 2 months ago. Got a great price, $21 with free shipping.

It runs under the console, under the seat carpet, under the door trim, behind the cargo area side and out into the fridge. There's still about 2 feet of cord beside the fridge.

Nice Mounting Setup! I may copy!

Hey Andrew, i guess that answers your question! :D

One of the things I like about having the readout attached to the Engel is that I move the fridge to the garage and then it becomes a beer/pop fridge. This way, I can still see the temp while plugged into 110v. Just FYI.

Dude-What is "pop". You have been living in the Midwest far too long.:flipoff2: See you in Moab!

Same here!

I bought a indoor/outdoor digital thermo with remote probe for the outdoor sensor from Walmart a while back. Don't remember what I paid for it, but it does both C and F and has % relative humidity readout, too.

I put it under the mesh of the transit back by the switch. No velcros needed and I can move the fridge from the back of the 80 (12V) to the garage and run it on 110V.

My only complaint is my 30 qt unit weighs almost 50 lbs empty. Most of the time I have to remove the basket full of drinks before moving the fridge from the garage to the back of the 80.

Do not slam the power cord in the tail gate, it will slice the cord.

X2. I didn't want to turn the Engel off while vacuuming the back of the cruiser so I sat it outside then forgot and shut the tailgate.:doh:Sliced through it cleaner than side cutters.

My vote is to use an auxillary battery setup. Also make sure that you use 6mm twin core wire minimum when you wire it up. I used a cig lighter in the back but Hella (amongst others) makes a cool connector called a Merit plug. These resist the chance of the plug falling out.

Gotta keep those drinks cold.

I'm interested in the group buy.
