At this point anything that shiny under the hood of my 40 would look seriously out of place!

I had an idea the other day.

Let's see if I can add a "modern" wiper to the OEM wiper blade. Just so happens that I saved the last two blades I removed, for this exact experiment.

Removed the old rubber wipers from the metal blade portion, slid the new rubber wiper in and trimmed it off at the end, and folded the tab back down. Repeat as needed.

I bought a single 24" blade from the house of Walton for $15.

I know the wipers are readily available through various places, but knowing that I can just replace the rubber pieces for $15 on any given day helps out.

Let's see how the test goes next time it snows, or rains.

Worst case, it ends up posted in the redneckness thread!

or worse, the "another one bites the dust" thread

I try to avoid those nowadays.

Some people have sensitive feelings.

Great move

Turns out the Lexus dealer sells the brand new Lexus "wiper inserts" (just the rubber) for my wife's new Lexus , 2 front and the rear for under $20 total and an easy peasey swap.
I was shocked they made it so cheap and easy.
It definitely had me looking at how the blades were assembled on my other cars

Toyota sells rubber inserts (they call them Windshield Wiper Blade for the rubber vs Windshield Wiper Blade Assembly for the complete blade) dating back to the FJ40 but sadly not for the 60's/70's. However a crafty person like @rkymtnflyfisher can come up with an insert. Given the price of the early 40 wiper blades these day, inserts are a fantastic idea!

I have to do the same thing for the rear wiper on my Toyota Sienna. Way cheaper and worth the effort.

Now it's guaranteed not to rain until fall.

That’s because changing the rear wiper on a Sienna is like folding a fitted sheet

Time for a new belt. Plus a spare for the extra parts stash.

Test drive to a local trailhead, then a good 5 mile trail run.

FYI.

The wiper experiment was a win. Works like a champ.

Slummin the old rail line for wild asparagus. Legend has it birds used to eat the asparagus seeds from the rail cars full of asparagus, then while sitting on fences and power lines spread seeds throughout the areas around the rail line.

Luckily for me, nobody really walks some of these areas anymore.
