Another issue is the electronics are different i believe. The trans if from an 02... engine is 04. I believe to connectors are different on the little black electrical box.

But I guess I'll call around and see if I can get better pricing. I can always go to the more ethnic side of town... I'm sure it will be cheaper there (and cash only) :)

if you're talking about the transmissions, they should be the same for 02 and 04. i assume the "black electrical box" you're referring to is on the driver side of the trans where the shift linkage sticks out of the case. that's called an MLPS. manual lever positioning sensor.

As far as strength wise there is no comparison the chevy options are much stronger. we installed a np205 and full float 14 bolt rear in my friends BB454 60 and I would say its at least twice as strong as the toyota stuff. You can hammer a 14 bolt rear with a bb all day long and not worry. A 2f can snap a cruiser rear axle.

George is right you do have some added space / drive line concerns but they aren't to much work to overcome.

If SOA or 35"+ tires are in your plans I would think hard about the chevy setup. It is stronger by far.
If not stick with the split case and stock rear Its plenty strong for normal driving/ moderate 4wheeling.

14 bolts are great but you loose a ton of ground clearance ( like 2.5" ) at the pumpkin and they are HEAVY! if you're gonna run 38" or larger tires, then sure, run a 14b. but anything less and the cruiser axles are just fine except for serious rock crawling.

205s are great too but they're beyong HEAVY and the 1.96 low range sucks. then again, the torque of a big block would make up for that.
split cases are amazingly strong, i have yet to see one "break".

My neighbor is a transmission builder and he would said he does it for under 200$. I can't remember what he said exactly but it was something under 200$. That's just swapping the shaft.

He knows his stuff and I trust him. He did an excellent job with a custom shift kit in my 4l60e.

Are you in AZ Kurtis? That would be sweet man! I'm in PHX area. If I could get it done by him for $150 I would be all over it.

Pretty close, i'm in Gilbert. I'll grab his number and pm it to you tomorrow.

Some progress

Little update: the old heart came out and found a new owner (Greg @ Vintage offroad, very nice guy)

Today cut and grinded on the old motor mounts, pulled exhaust, rear heater, and cleaned the frame and firewall a bit. Still needs more cleaning to be where I want it. Need to take care of a small bit of surface rust on front of frame. Other than that its in REALLY good shape!

It was a messy job....

Not cool Dude :D you have a giant jump on me. You still on for the bulk discount? I just got my filler car running so I have transportation during my swap. Still have to smog and tag it though. Find yourself a wiring diagram for the truck that your motor came out of and you shouldn't have to buy a harness. I was copied on my year motor and have all I need for the harness incorporation. Keep the pictures coming. My will be starting soon. Going to the White Mountains on the 24th or 25th. Maybe I'll be starting after that. matt

On my lunch break today, I put together a rough list of what I'll need to start buying, and a to-do of sorts...

Please add, delete, edit, and share input/thoughts

AA adapter
2wd output shaft and install
motor mounts (thinking custom chevy retrofited)
TAC module and gas pedal assembly (metal to allow for cut/weld)
fuel lines/fittings (need help here)
camaro oil pan and dipstick (need part #'s)
corvette exhaust manifolds
fuel pump (isuzu npr), filter, regulator (aero)
shifter (linkage style, any suggestions)
Thermal-tek and/or undercoat (clean up firewall/apply)
Tranny hard lines (or not, need help here)
x-case rebuild kit
PS gear box rebuild
Gauges (going completely aftermarket for ease, any suggestion semi-cheap)
Radiator (thinking factory style w/ integrated tranny cooler, any other affordable options- especially for hose bib location)
Figure out wiring and PCM retune
O2 sensors and exhaust

I'm gonna stop... thats a long list

that's a good start. i've been able to mopdify the oem gm pedal to work in the 60s. for the fuel system, run a corvetter filter, it's got the regulator and return built in.
