Photos and Questions...

Got me an engine stand! Wohoo... opted for the more expensive one from Harbor Freight because it was more stout (rated at 2000 lbs). It's very heavy duty & foldable. Big ups to central machinery!

How she sits now. Motor will be out VERY soon!

The dreaded seam... how do these look guys? Not separated...

This little fawker (alignment thingy) is on the wrong side (same as tranny) Hoping one or the other can be swapped easily.

Can anyone ID any of these connectors? I know one if for the drive by wire system. All come off main loom here:

Daniel,
Thanks for the chat last night. I didn't realize that you were apart already I'm :frown:. You've got a little jump on me. This could work out good for both of us. We can each work at solving the other persons swap issues. When you going to be back in Tucson next? Let me know. I'll be in touch. matt

Mine's not a DD though, so I can have it sitting in pieces in the garage with no worry.:D Your situation is time seneitive, so you'll probably finish before me. Ya It should work out great... I'm in Tucson fairly regularly, usually sundays when I make it down there.

Okay, some bad news. Turns out most tranny shops want too much to swap the output sahft on the 4X4 4l60e. So I'm starting to rethink my options.

1) Try to trade for 2wd 4l60e.
2) Use chevy transfercase behind current 4wd 4l60e.
3) Full rebuild on current with upgrades TCI kit.
4) manual transmission options (trying not to go this route)

What do you guys think?????

If I did it over again I would have gone option # 2. I'm happy with the split case and all but money wise its about the same, maybe slightly less by going with a chevy tcase/ rear axle. You get more options for disk brakes, lockers , gears with a chevy t case and rear axle at a much cheaper price.

What were you quoted to go through the trans? matt

Upwards of $500... basically the entire transmission has to come apart I guess :bang:

How do they compare strength wise? That would mean I need to get transfer case (np241 + SYE kit), and rear axle... maybe could come out about the same $... but it's less of a Toyota.

My general plan is to keep all toyota just transplant engine/tranny.

Plus I really dig the offset toyo axle. :p

you should have dowel pins on both sides of the block and none on the transmission...if that's what you were referring to in post 42... that's the way I"ve always seen them, unless something has changed over the years.

$500 for changing the shaft.... that's a rip off.. !!!
I took it to the local shop.. they been there for 30+ years.. they charged me $130 cash.......(3 years ago)
Shop around.. Im sure youll find a better price....

how many miles are on your trans? do you know it works well for sure or did you buy it withtout test driving the donor vehicle? if you sell/trade, you might end up with somebody else's problems.....
i'd say pull the pan and have a look in there. if the fluid looks good and there's no debris in the pan, get the output shaft replaced.

2) Use chevy transfercase behind current 4wd 4l60e.

don't!
not only will you have to go with a gm t-case and sye kit as well as a different rear axle, but you'll end up with way more driveline angle since the domestic t-cases utilize a rear output that's inline with the transmission main shaft. that's about 7" higher than a cruiser case.

3) Full rebuild on current with upgrades TCI kit.

why? if there's nothing wrong with the trans then i'd have a shop replace the output shaft, maybe put in a kevalr band and check all the frictions. go with some kevlar frictions for od if need be and have them reseal the pump. they'll be able to determine what it needs if anything when they tear into it.

4) manual transmission options (trying not to go this route)

i like autos.......

What do you guys think?????

Another issue is the electronics are different i believe. The trans if from an 02... engine is 04. I believe to connectors are different on the little black electrical box.

But I guess I'll call around and see if I can get better pricing. I can always go to the more ethnic side of town... I'm sure it will be cheaper there (and cash only) :)
