Yep, I was thinking about that the last couple of days. I need to start getting ramped up for that already. Gotta decide where to take the 2011 Trek also. I *might* be able to get a scouting trip wedged in to take a look at the Alphabet Hills area, south of the Denali. But from the air that looks to be almost completely treeless rolling tundra and low brush. Definitely some muddy/soft terrain, and sweeping grand vistas, but maybe a bit boring otherwise. Although the route in via Swede Lake would be a bit different.

Pushing up where Kevin and I have been exploring, and over to the head of Kosina Creek, Right in the heart of the Talkeetnas would be fantastic... but it is a LONG run... and back out the same way until we get back to Reality Flats/Lil'O. And there are places past Square lake that call for bigger rigs than we have required so far for the Trek. And to be honest not sure that I am ready to share that area yet. ;)

Simple enough to tun te Tok-Paxson or Eureka areas again. I'm still looking for the Lost Tralhead into Tazlina Lake, and have found some intriguing trails that would seem to get us to Nelchina Glacier. But even if those prove up, I can't see spending a week plus on those.

Anyway, you are right. Time to start a new thread...

Holy crap! I just read through this entire thing and man, this is awesome. I dont have a Cruiser but would love something even half of what this stuff is. Whats the minimum build like for areas like this?

Any news on your earlier idea of having some pre-built 80s on hand for us to rent for the trek? Last year I ran the calculations and it looked like a seriously arduous task of finding the time and money to get there with my own truck. Last time I figured it would be something on the order of $2500 in gas, require three drivers rolling 20+ hours a day there and back and three weeks off work.

When you create the new thread, could you post the link back to this one?

Thanks!

The minimums for vehicles on the Trek have stabilized (for Cruisers and Mini-trucks) at 35x12.50 inch or larger mud tread tires, rear locker, waterproofed to at least 3 foot, 2 meter radio 36 gallons of fuel on board and a long list of strongly suggested considerations for the vehicle, and gear for the rig and for the occupants.

Last year Snorkels were not required but everyone had them and it was a good thing. Snorkels will be required on any runs in the Tok-Paxson area in the future and likely on all Treks.

The requirements for the Trek are more than sufficient for travel in the group for the Trek. When we head out ourselves in these same areas to push new trails or enjoy some that we skip during the Trek, we use rigs that are a bit further up the food chain. :)

For what we do on the Trek we have not had any overall widespread problems that would have been eliminated by moving to 37s. A rutted stretch this last year would be one exception to that. but when you cover the distance on the trail that we do during the Trek, you have to accept a few short sections that give most people a bit of trouble.

And since most drive their rigs up, we have to balance trail capability with affordability andf road worthiness.

Lots of people do run the Trek on larger tires. But so far we have seen no reason to kick the requirements up from 35s.

Kevin makes his boggers keep working to the end. :)

If I had the clearance for them I'd have happily traded those bald Boggers for my brand new Toyo MTs a few times.

The highway wasn't one of those times though. On the way back to town we pulled over to let Kevin catch up. (his front suspension was made of cordwood and parachute cord) and when he blasted past at 55MPH it sounded like a a P51 doing a fly-by

The Toyo's were very impressive in the mud. I'm running the 37x14.5 on Knuckles now and it's the best mud tire I've had on Knuckles. Of course it's the biggest tire I've had on there too.

Notice how the mud is on the truck where it is supposed to be and not clogging the treads.

Another angle. :)

Very nice, Charla! Thanks for sharing.
