Pulled the air filter today- noticed the steel mesh top screen looks like it's melting, top of the cover looks damaged also? Is there a fix? What causes this?
No, neverThe fix is to replace the filter. Have you sprayed anything corrosive in that area, a cleaner or something?
Yes, that's me& have a evap canister and fuel pump on the way- still not sure about that issue- I'll take a look at the TB@NolaNomad
Are you the one who was posting recently about the crank/no start issue and was talking about overheating / fuel boiling?
I've never seen this before, has anyone else? For that much heat to be in there seems strange.
How do things look at the throttle body / plate?
I cant remember if your other post ever mentioned what temperatures your engine is running at.... Is she getting that hot where s*** around it is starting to melt? hmmm not sure what you've got going on here.Yes, that's me& have a evap canister and fuel pump on the way- still not sure about that issue- I'll take a look at the TB
My scan tool plugged into ECU has read above 215F ,that high but not above the 220F mark. I see the metal filter has these numbers:I cant remember if your other post ever mentioned what temperatures your engine is running at.... Is she getting that hot where s*** around it is starting to melt? hmmm not sure what you've got going on here.
I think that screen is on the top side of all of the 100 series air filter box. I honestly never noticed it, and could also be wrong....but that's not like a prefilter that you change, its in there full time and I don't see a replacement part number on parts diagramMaybe I'm the only one who doesn't know, but what type/brand air filter is that?
I can certainly be wrong....for some reason I thought I've seen something like that before but yeah the more I think about it why would there be some filter between the air filter and intake hose ...hm hm hm .Ok makes sense I guess.
However I'm pretty dam sure I don't have anything like that in the upper part of my airbox but I'll be looking for it next time I'm in there.
Ah , I think thats where ive seen it . My highlander with the 3mz has this filter. Different style airbox all together though. I dont think the 2uz is supposed to have this installed but I don't knowThat's a hydrocarbon filter, not sure if that's factory to the 100, only seen them on Tundra/4runner. As mentioned, was there a regular paper filter under it and what condition was it in?
This looks like a metal mesh sandwich that seems built into the top box of the lid to the air filter box. In the picture- I already removed the paper filter- honestly- I never noticed it until todayI cant remember if your other post ever mentioned what temperatures your engine is running at.... Is she getting that hot where s*** around it is starting to melt? hmmm not sure what you've got going on here.
Yeah, thanks, I never knew actually what this was for- no idea why it melted- im concernedThat's a hydrocarbon filter, not sure if that's factory to the 100, only seen them on Tundra/4runner. As mentioned, was there a regular paper filter under it and what condition was it in?
No, I think it's stock- when I run the numbers I pulled off that filter-17812-50020I think that screen is on the top side of all of the 100 series air filter box. I could be wrong? Nolanomad is that an aftermarket pre filter or OEM

The paper was fine, I noticed nothing unusual- I'm a little concernedThat's a hydrocarbon filter, not sure if that's factory to the 100, only seen them on Tundra/4runner. As mentioned, was there a regular paper filter under it and what condition was it in?
I see now lots of fellas rip them out over on the Tundra forum- says its useless emissions baby sitters? dunnoOk makes sense I guess.
However I'm pretty dam sure I don't have anything like that in the upper part of my airbox but I'll be looking for it next time I'm in there.
No backfire.. I bought this LX470 some years ago... PO might have had something happen, unbeknownst to meMaybe backfiring into the air box would be the cause. Have you heard any popping or chugging sounds while driving?
TerrifyingIt would have been better, if all information was in your other threads' OP. But for now, it may be a good idea. To link these two threads, in each OP.

That's is a charcoal EVAP filter, only in the 06-07 VVTi. This was added to meet EPA laws.
I've never seen one damaged. But never pulled out, to see back side. This charcoal filter, is not considered a replaceable part, in 100 series. As such, not sold separately from the air box assembly. For now just remove it, and make sure a good OEM air filter in place. Use care to not curl air filter rubber seal, as you place lid on and lock it down.
Your temp above 200F, indicate your running hot. High cylinder temp, due to running a lean fuel mixtures. Can contribute to running hot. Clogged CC can contribute to lean running. As I suspect and mentioned in your other thread. Your coolant system is not running at peak performance. Very likely, radiator fins are clogged. See Alert on cleaning rad fins, Same one I linked you to in your other thread. Other issue in coolant system, like; thermostat, cap, resevoir and low coolant may also need correcting. Which much of, is talked about in that Alert thread.
I'll add:
Running hot. With ECT near 220F, in itself IMHO; Would not radiate heat, to a point inside air box lid. To such a temp, as to melt plastic. Even an engine, that overheated so badly it warp heads, change color of block and other metals, melted intake manifold and plastic of cam sensors, would do this.
What has likely happened. Excessive Fuel vapor, saturated the charcoal air box filter. That it somehow ignited and smoldered. Either spontaneous combusted or combustion gasses escaping into intake ignited it.
I'm going to call you!
yessir! I have the Charcoal Canister and a Fuel pump on order. I did spray the radiator and applied a little Coil Cleaner to the parts of the radiator I could access. Sometimes the temp varies between 198-215F after the cleaning..so hard to determine if that helped, I was told Previous Owner did replace the radiator with OEM several years ago(?) . Wonder if Lean Fuel Mix can be tweaked using Techstream??It would have been better, if all information was in your other threads' OP. But for now, it may be a good idea.
