Against my better judgment.... A bj70 project

Then I got to move onto the outside. I've split it into 3 driffernt patches. Forward, top, and rear. I started with the fwd one. I made a beer box template, then cut it out and fit it too first. Then just made the bends as needed as I went down.
I decided to go for the effort of adding the fender lip, just by making small relief cuts so I can bend it. It's defiantly not perfect looking, but it's not bad.
On this panel I did a bunch of tack welds on the side, and then plug welds around the wheel arch. The plug weld method was working a lot better so I did the whole upper panel that way.

The second panel went on really easy, bending the lip was simple cause it's mostly straight. Then just a bunch of plug welds top and bottom, and butt welds front and back to the other skins.

So still one more patch to go, then final grinding, body filler and paint... Oh yeah then the other side :bang:

Awesome work.

The last panel on the right side was the most challenging so far, I had to do a lot off butt welds to not the greatest metal in one spot. and the way it was fit it ended up with a bit of a natural dent in the bottom.... BUT, it's done and looks a lot better than a big hole.
I welded the bottom and rear first, so I could peel it back and get some seam sealer over top is the joints before I closed the quater forever.

Anyway, on to the other side tomorrow.

Well it's been a long 3 days, 12.5 hours yesterday. But the right side is all welded in.
The right looked better than the left at first, but I actually had to do a lot more work to the underside.
Anyway too tired to write about it, here's pictures.

Had to ease the welding burns with some rum last night :D

Wow man, that came together rather quick! Nice work!

You could almost have that thing ready for next weekend trip to gold river; but you still don't have the time off right?

Unfortunately no, I just used one week off for this task, and I have another in July. So they wouldn't be thrilled if I tried to take more.

Looks good man.

Nice to see a canadian bj70 getting some love, and not just cannibalized for one of them infernal jdm's.
Haha yea, especially when some of the donor bj70's I've seen online have been less rusty than mine

Quick update, I spent the last week of evenings sanding the thing.... So much fun.
Here's where I'm at, should be painting tonight

When you bought it 3 months ago, I didn't imagine you'd be putting the finishing touches on it now... I'm impressed, you made that look so easy.

Got the paint done Thursday night. We built a makeshift paint booth in my shop, then Keith (koopz) came by to give me a hand spraying. The colour match was pretty good, but a couple paint issues at the back means I will have to respray the back quarters. But I'm out of time for this project for now so that will have to wait for a while. I got it all put back together on Friday and am back driving it around.
I'm very glad to have it back, I was getting pretty sick of driving an auto crv.

My sisters truck is leaving this weekend too, the shop is so empty now!

Well the 70 went back into the shop last week, this time mechanical. It's needed a clutch since I bought it, and I found the front output bearing in the tcase to be screwed, so it was time to pull the trans. I already had the clutch kit, so I picked up a t-case kit and dove in.
I got the transmission out in about 2 hours, it was a little interesting working solo but not too bad. Rebuild went pretty well. Had to borrow a couple pullers from friends and a bearing splitter, but it's all pretty simple.
Thursday night I got the trans back in, and buttoned the rest of it up.
The very last thing to do was put the trans shifter back in, and when I did that I found that it was stuck in gear, reverse actually. I couldn't help think I had put something together wrong. Being that this was the 12th hour of working on it, and I was minutes away from driving it home, the thought of having to pull the trans again was a little too much to handle.
After a few minutes of cursing I got on to google and found a mud thread about the same problem, turns out if you put an h55 upright like I did the reverse rod slides into the wrong spot. A few people suggested pulling the top plate off, or the pulling the reverse sensor and fishing around with a screwdriver. Both didn't look fun to me.
The winning post was actually from radd cruisers, which showed how to access it from the shift tower hole. 30 seconds later it was fixed.... And I could breath again. I then drove it home that night and all was well.
