advice on disc conversion?

Anybody out there interested in getting me up to speed on a disc conversion for my '71 40? I've tried to read all the entries in the FAQ section, but after awhile my head is spinning, and I feel like I've gotten nowhere. I guess if I could ask questions while I'm reading but this forum doesn't work like that. If there are any takers, I sure would appreciate it - I'd love to think maybe this car might see the road before the end of the summer. I've given up throwing money at the drum brakes and chasing that dead end - the 9mm threads are just too much of a hassel - but I have gotten pretty good at double flaring brake line. Thanks,

WHat you need to find is a minitruck knuckles or the whole axle. I'm sure we can help you get through this. Post up some questions. Findin a disk brake 40 axle is by far the best option. But are hard to pry from my cold dead hands.
 
Finding a disc brake 40 axle would be the way to go simplest by far, I think the next easiest is what I did swapping a 60 or 62 axle in. Once it gets to the conversions where your cutting up knuckles and piecing together 2 different axles it just seems like your making an easy job hard on yourself.
 
I got the TSM rear disc conversion and I really like it. Lots of stopping power:

My fronts were done by a PO. Really nice crossdrilled/slotted Willow rotors but I think there's some air in the lines and its a little mushy. Still working on that.

I did replace the Master clyinder with a Fenco 92 toyota v6 pickup unit for $60 at autozone, No core charge and it bolts right up. You just have to grind down the shaft about 1/2 inch at least.

Also get a proportioning valve. It stopped my rears from locking up
 
Thanks - I saw that but didn't think it would swap over to a 1971 and I don't know anything about the gears - I'm not planning on doing any trail riding - it's strictly a "mall" rig:) - BUT I'm all over it, if it's likely to work!!! I called and left him a message so hopefully we can connect. $275 - good price!! - I've put more than that into the current brakes and have nothing to show for it. Beers on me if I end of visiting Georgia anytime soon.

You can just use your current third you have in the front. It's a 4.11. And the DS will bolt right up. Then turn around and sell the 3.70 for around 100 or so. Not much need for them but the carrier is worth that.
 
just make sure that disc. axle is 78 and down........... you should have 4.11 in your diffs and if it is a 79 and up axle it will have 3.73

See, there y'all go again:flipoff2: - getting all mechanical on me with words like "third," 4.11 or 3.7 - In my month of trying to learn all things land cruiser - I just haven't figured out what those things are - YET:) So I'm off to google third - but bottom line is this axle should work - is that what I'm hearing or is that dependent on what I got under the hood? Much appreciation for the help - I hope one of these days I can talk the talk and walk the walk - but right now, I've taken on this project having done little more than change the tire and the oil - tire stayed on but I'm not sure the oil stayed in. Thanks Marshall - hope that wasn't out of place for me to be throwing around the "fingers" being a newbie and all - just got to talk to Randy and I think I'm going to take the axle off his hands - am excited about disc brakes - wasn't planning on going this deep on the first play from scrimmage but if y'all are willing to talk me through the pattern then what the hell - it's why I got the thing - just don't want to wear out my welcome too early:) Thanks,

you will love the upgrade and it is a fairly straight forward one......... when the time comes to install it let us know and we will come give you a hand and make sure you don't make any newbie mistakes :grinpimp:

Thanks for the heads up on the axle - I spoke with Randy today and told him I would take the axle if Marshall and everyone could convince me it would work - because I just don't have the experience to know whether it will or won't - to be honest, if someone dropped it in my front yard, I might know it came from a car but that would be it. I might try to come down this weekend except it's at Peter Marion shop and they won't be open - unless we can get it moved or something - but I'll let Randy work on that. If you're in town - I'd be willing to buy a :beer: - and if it can get moved to your yard........ maybe a box of frontline or two. Thanks again.

The third, third member, diff, or pumpkin is the part of the axle circled in red. 4.11 and 3.73 is referring to the gear ratio of said third. You may have to remove the third member from the new axle and swap the old one back in to maintain the gear ratio. But that is easy about a dozen bolt, 2 c-clips, and a BFH. Hope that helps clear things up a little. Just let us know and I'm sure someone can come help. Especially if you have :beer:

William..good luck...let me know how it goes...I am looking at doing a rear disc brake conversion....hoping that the rear axles/brake parts from a 91 toyota pick-up truck will work b/c I have a buddy who has a 91 toyota p/u parts truck...
