Videos, artifacts, The Lincoln Cabin, the funeral procession, all faithfully replicated there... I'd like to go back there with more time on my hands. Please make an effort to go... a truly amazing place.

By Springfield's Union Station...
upload_2016-7-4_23-5-20.webp

And the Capitol in Illinois... many of the old buildings in town appear very well preserved...
upload_2016-7-4_23-9-24.webp

But we had to leave town, again... through more corn, again... towards St. Louis...
upload_2016-7-4_23-11-44.webp

On that drive South we got to drive on some dirt roads again... on top of levees this time!!! The Mississippi is quite mighty at this point. You are always aware of that massive amount of water flowing down South not too far away. If you forget, the levees are there to remind you!!!

The Cardinals were playing, and the game must have been about to end, because fans were flowing out... and we didn't want to get caught in the traffic. I had no plans to visit St. Louis, just to take a few pictures on our way South... so of course we drove Northwest...

Northwest?! That's the wrong way! Well, I wanted to go into Ferguson and drive those streets. It felt right, especially after our visit to Lincoln's Museum. And we did. I wanted to see and feel, not to hear from others. Our plan was to find a local place to eat, get some gas, and maybe talk to some locals...

And so we drove to the exact location where Michael Brown lost his life...
upload_2016-7-4_23-23-48.webp

A clean and neat complex...
upload_2016-7-4_23-25-3.webp

Unfortunately surrounded by a failing local economy. With the locals themselves not exhibiting a welcoming attitude. I have lived in both Newark and Baltimore before... never felt the... what would be the right word here... suspicion???, that the Ferguson locals displayed with us. There is an "intensity" in the air, a "gritted teeth" feeling, a "narrowing of the slits of the eyes..." that causes your alertness to raise 10-fold.

I got some gas, in an uncomfortable setting, and drove South through St. Louis again. This place has got some big challenges ahead of it...

Man, you really don't want to hang out there. it's sad, but murders every day, three shot today. I'm just south of St. Louis if you need something give me a shout.

I feel a bit sad by the experience... but happy that I went through it...

So... this picture was taken an hour or so afterwards... how about that! In the farms of Southern Missouri, near Ste. Genevieve... heading towards Tennessee...
upload_2016-7-4_23-37-2.webp

Exact same location, different perspective...
upload_2016-7-4_23-40-19.webp

And finally across the Mississippi again, with the Chester Bridge in Chester Illinois in the background...
upload_2016-7-4_23-44-14.webp

Would you believe me if I tell you I have many more pictures like these???:D:D:D

Tomorrow? Towards Nashville, or as close as we can get...

Read and ride along!

How'd you deal with all that traffic in Springfield?!?

Looks like a very pretty town!!

Drive safe!!

Hadn't read in a couple days but glad to jump on here and get all the updates. Glad to see it is still going well and you are on the last leg of your trip. From the sounds of it, sounds like so are you. I've loved seeing your journey and all the places you have been. Take care and enjoy what you have left. Even though right now you are tired, once you get home and get back to the grind you will likely miss even the times when you only wanted to be home.

@airon23 I hear you... and I agree... I'm over the tiredness...

Left Chester in the morning heading South... towards the Southernmost point in Illinois, Cairo... where the Ohio River meets the Mississippi. This picture shows the spot, with the Ohio on the left and the Mississippi on the right. They move away from this photo as the Mississippi...
upload_2016-7-5_19-39-2.webp

From about the same spot, the Cairo Ohio River Bridge crossing from Illinois into Kentucky, which we drove through a while later... the Mississippi is on the left of this picture...
upload_2016-7-5_19-38-34.webp

This was unique... left lane goes to Kentucky, right lane to Missouri... while you are in Illinois. Illinois really ends here...
upload_2016-7-5_20-18-50.webp

And we drove a lot today... again... through rivers, wetlands, swamps. If there is a memory I'm going to have of this drive through Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky is the water! It's everywhere! Creeks, reservoirs... amazing. Lots of farming still... corn for the most part, although we came across sunflower seeds for the first time.

Anyone knows what this is???
upload_2016-7-5_19-49-50.webp

It's in Kentucky, a monument to Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865. A 350 foot tall obelisk!!! In Fairview Kentucky... a ways away I tell you... in the middle of a lot of farm land. The second tallest obelisk in the world after Washington's Monument... My brother called it the biggest most hidden monument in America... :D I guess there's a reason for it...

Did you know that both Lincoln and Davis were born in log cabins, less than a year apart, in Kentucky? Interesting coincidence isn't it???

We're already in Tennessee... will spend all day tomorrow in Nashville. Should be a fun day!

The 40? It's 10 miles away from 5,000 miles on the trip... no issues to report. Fingers crossed. I see some cars stranded from time to time... and this 38 year old Jeep (as everyone continues to call it!!! Random people tell me "love your Jeep!... and what's one to do... say thanks and move on:bang: :):)) continues to truck along...

More tomorrow...

Read and ride along!

Hector and Alex...

While I don't get my panties in a wad when people call my 40 a 'Jeep' I do always make a point of telling them it's actually a Toyota. Not so much to feed my ego, but because it almost always fascinates them, and then they are eager to ask more questions. You never know when you may introduce another person to the epicness of the Mighty Toyota FJ40! And I believe the more people we can bring into our passion, the better. Just my .2 cents

Welcome to Kentucky!

If you pass through Louisville, I'd recommend at least driving past the Louisville slugger factory on Main Street, stopping by Churchill Downs and hitting a bourbon distillery tour or four (My favorite is the Buffalo Trace hard hat tour which is in Frankfort KY). There is also some great food in Louisville. PM me if you need anything, want a few more suggestions or want to grab a cup of coffee and donut at the best shops in town!

Well, I have lived in Kentucky my entire life (in the south eastern area) and never knew there was a monument to Jefferson Davis here, let alone one that size! Just goes to show you can learn something new about your state, regardless of how long you have lived there.
Rooting for the Cruiser to make it home!

You know when we start fixing these things we are always afraid of being stranded-5000 miles; they are much more durable than we give them credit for!!!!!!!

Hector,

As I said before... your pictures and narrative are awesome!!

I also said I had a similar trip (Vegas-Utah-Idaho-Wyoming-Montana-Washington-B.C. and back, perhaps through Oregon-NoCal-Reno to Vegas) planned and have delayed twice... but, your trip definitely has me jonesing to go!!

I have a spine surgeon consultation scheduled for Aug 10th and will see where that takes me.

But, I'm gonna do the trip next spring, regardless... I'll be 68 and refuse to put it off further... I need to go while I still remember where I'm going... if Dianna wants to go, we will take the Tundra and Casita travel trailer rather than 44.

Your trip has helped me 'focus' mine somewhat... I'm a wide-open-spaces kinda 'boy' and really want to visit the northwestern US and southwestern Canadian area that you just traveled through. So, I'll/we'll spend our time in those areas... taking advantage of some awesome fly fishing as well.

We're leaving, in the morning, for our annual 3 week trip through So. Utah, No. NM, into (2 weeks camping/fly fishing with our daughter and son-in-law in) So. Colorado (I hope I can fish this year!)...

So, you will be home before we get back... and we have NO connectivity where we camp. I'll catch up on the remainder of your trip when I get back... but, I wanted to thank you for sharing your trip will all of us.

Your willingness to take a trip like this with minimal mechanical knowledge ;) (nothing personal, no insult intended) should open others' eyes to the potential of their 40's... as someone (@FJ40Jim, I think... misquoting here) said, "its a tractor engine, it will continue running long after its dead". :rimshot:

Thank you for sharing and drive safe!! :steer:

Thanks for sharing your journey with us. Love all the pictures and the history you are seeing.

What tent are you using?

Awesome trip-gotta plan a similar trip for my '78.................will be a while!!!!;)

@Bluegrass40 Excellent! Will take your recommendations in! Thanks...

Well, I for one will miss all of your return commentary... Hopefully someone will pick it up! All the best of luck on your medical consultation, so that you can get on that long-planned trip! The 44... take the 44...:)

Thanks for sharing your journey with us. Love all the pictures and the history you are seeing.

What tent are you using?

Thanks! And here's the tent...

Not a lot of miles today... spent most of the day in Nashville, and got to crack open my tool box and get some grease on my hands! But not to worry... no real emergencies yet...

Visited The Hermitage... Andrew Jackson's Plantation in the outskirts of Nashville. Great insight into pre-Civil War life in the South. Very well maintained property, with lots of information. We may not agree with a number of Jackson's policies today, but it's difficult to argue with his passion, commitment and drive. The guy was a dynamo... I need to read about him a bit more.

His and Rachel's (his wife) Mansion...
upload_2016-7-6_23-26-15.webp

But walking the grounds, in a Tennessee afternoon, was murder! Someone mentioned Hot, Hazy, and Humid before... well it was Hot, Hazy and Humid today! Sweat was coming down like the first time I ate Indian food... not fun! The locals even cancelled some of their planned events at the Plantation because of the 98 Heat Index... crazy hot.

An actual Slave dwelling... Mr. Jackson had 150+...

Visiting with one of the Jacksons in one of the homes in the Plantation...

Now the star of the night??? The Grand Ole Opry! or... the weekly radio country music "Show that Made Country Music Famous."
upload_2016-7-6_23-59-36.webp

Now I have to admit that I have not been particularly into Country Music... my wife is a fan... but this show was a blast! The talent, the music, the energy... this was great! So much so that I KNOW I will be back here soon... I got goosebumps a few times, my typical body signal that what I'm listening to is Goooood. My wife was of course listening live on opry.com/tunein with my own commentary to color things on Messenger...:D

Wade Hayes sang this song... rocked the House! The best one of the night...

JT Hodges... just a picture...
upload_2016-7-7_0-2-11.webp

Eight singers, each one of them for ~15 minutes, so a lot of varied music for about two and a half hours... this clip is ~3 minutes from Chris Janson... not the best three minutes of the show, but a good representation nonetheless... and my own video... so sorry for the shakiness.

Now, I did tell you I had to get my hands dirty today... and here's why. I get to the 40 early this afternoon and the alarm was going off! Now of course that by itself is not that unusual, tractor trailers, thunder, all sorts of things can set it off, but I couldn't get it to turn off! Tried all sort of tricks, disconnecting the battery and the horn (hence the grease), and connecting it back... no luck. It kept going off!

And, try to work under the hood with the alarm going off... not fun! I stuffed a dirty t-shirt (of which I have several at this point!:D) on the horn to allow for a more manageable noise level... but still... So I ended up cutting the power altogether to the alarm. So no alarm for the rest of the trip!

Oh well, as long as I don't market this fact over the internet I should be fine...

Tomorrow??? Another milestone passes... my brother is leaving... so it will be me, myself and I for the next few days... and those of you that care to chat along! I should end up the day near if not in, Louisville, Kentucky. Planning to visit a few cool places... to include some of those recommended by @Bluegrass40 and Whiskey Row!:grinpimp:. The final drive North begins...

So Read and Ride Along!

Great pictures Hector!!

Oh, I hope to take 44, but Dianna won't travel without the luxury of our 17' Casita Travel Trailer  she says, "we bought 44 for you and daBoise".

To be fair, there is not enough room for Dianna, myself and daBoise (two Golden Retriever, each 80 lbs) in 44... not for a long trip.

Drive safe Hector!!

Following your travels and love the photos. Although I haven't ventured as far west, I have been to many of the places you have been east of the Mississippi and remember the sign directing the road to two different states. What a beautiful country we are privileged to live in. Don't know if you are planning to come through NC, if you do I am sure we can provide some ride-alongs for a portion of your trip.

Gonna be a wet one for you today, AND Hazy, Hot and Humid later this afternoon! :D Yesterday was so humid that if you walked out doors after being in an air conditioned office, moisture would condense on your cool skin!
